Economics, Bitcoin, and Commentary by Saifedean Ammous
Saifedean Ammous is a Lebanese economist and author of The Bitcoin Standard (2018), one of the most widely cited books on Bitcoin monetary theory. By 2025, the book had sold more than 500,000 copies worldwide and had been translated into over 25 languages. Ammous presents Bitcoin as a hard, deflationary currency that offers an alternative to fiat-driven inflationary cycles.
In April 2025, Ammous warned that Bitcoin’s cycle peak, then trading near $105,000, could trigger a market correction of 70–80%, citing past halving-era patterns. Despite this caution, he continues to describe Bitcoin as the world’s “only realistic monetary foundation” for long-term wealth preservation. At Bitcoin MENA 2024, he spoke about the compatibility of Bitcoin with Islamic financial ethics and examined central bank exposure in high-debt nations. Ammous remains active in academic and macroeconomic circles, though his influence is largely concentrated within the Bitcoin maximalist community rather than broader DeFi or token economies.
