Politics, Law, and Commentary by Ted Cruz

Ted Cruz, the senior U.S. Senator from Texas since 2013, has emerged as one of the most vocal champions of cryptocurrency in Congress. In March 2025, he authored and passed through the Senate a resolution to overturn Biden-era restrictions on decentralized finance (DeFi) software developers, securing a 70–28 bipartisan vote. The measure now awaits the president’s signature. Cruz has also introduced the FLARE Act, designed to incentivize Bitcoin and cryptocurrency miners to repurpose waste gas for energy generation, aligning environmental goals with blockchain innovation.

A self-declared Bitcoin investor, he has praised the asset as a “reservoir of power” capable of stabilizing Texas’s electricity grid during peak demand. Cruz consistently warns against regulatory overreach, advocating for balanced frameworks that protect innovation without stifling growth. His initiatives directly link cryptocurrency policy to energy infrastructure, economic development, and technological leadership in the U.S.

Born Rafael Edward Cruz in Calgary, Canada, he attended Princeton University and Harvard Law School before clerking for Chief Justice William Rehnquist. Cruz served as Texas Solicitor General, arguing major cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, gaining a reputation as a skilled constitutional lawyer. In 2012, he won a long-shot Senate race as a Tea Party conservative and quickly became a prominent national political figure. He ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016, finishing second to Donald Trump after a contentious primary. Known for his strong conservative positions and willingness to challenge party leadership, Cruz has remained an influential voice in national debates on energy, technology, and economic freedom.
