Cybersecurity Education and Data Breach Alerts by Troy Hunt

Troy Hunt is an Australian web-security consultant and the creator of Have I Been Pwned? (HIBP), which has cataloged 644 data breaches by early 2023. He also authored security training on Pluralsight and frequently presents at conferences.

In a 2021 blog post, Hunt revealed ownership of the defunct Coinhive domain, used previously for cryptomining exploits, and repurposed it to warn users about cryptojacking, turning a legacy crypto tool into a protective resource. In March 2025, Hunt’s Mailchimp account was compromised by phishing tied to the Scattered Spider group. He publicly chronicled the crime, providing real-world lessons for crypto holders on protecting private information.

While specific revenues are private, his consultancy and HIBP remain major levers in digital security, earning him six-figure income. His work anchors crypto ecosystem safety by illustrating how security protocols can protect digital asset holders against emerging threats.
