OpenAI advertising revenue reaches $1 billion annually
OpenAI is actively generating revenue from advertising.

OpenAI said its advertising business has reached $1 billion in annual revenue. The company says the milestone demonstrates that its business model is becoming more diversified.

As CNBC reports, the figure is particularly important as OpenAI prepares for a potential IPO. The company will need to convince investors of the sustainability of its business at a valuation of around $852 billion. In addition to advertising, OpenAI generates revenue from enterprise products, ChatGPT subscriptions and APIs.

Advertising in ChatGPT expands

OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in the U.S. in February 2026. Ads are now available in more than 40 countries, while on August 31 the company began expanding self-service access for advertisers in India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.

Ads are shown to users of the free version of ChatGPT and Go subscribers. These groups make up the majority of the service’s audience, which totals around 1 billion weekly active users.

OpenAI emphasizes that ads are clearly labeled and do not influence ChatGPT’s answers. Advertisers also do not get access to users’ private conversations.

Going forward, the company plans to expand advertising into more markets, introduce new formats and measurement tools, and explore new ways for brands to interact with users inside ChatGPT.

When will OpenAI go public?

OpenAI expects to hold an IPO in 2027, although the listing could take place earlier if the company’s financial performance continues to grow rapidly. CFO Sarah Friar said this on August 19. According to her, OpenAI sees going public not as an end goal, but as another stage in raising capital.

Preparations are already underway: on June 8, OpenAI confidentially filed draft IPO registration documents with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The exact timing and terms of the offering have not yet been determined. Earlier reports suggested that OpenAI could seek a valuation of up to $1 trillion when it goes public.
