Anthropic expands Claude with personal finance tool for U.S. paid users
Anthropic is widening Claude’s role beyond general chatbot tasks with a new personal finance feature that links to users’ bank and card accounts. The beta rollout starts this week for Pro, Max, and Ultra subscribers in the U.S., as the company pushes further into specialized financial and legal services.
Highlights
- Anthropic launched a Personal Finance tool for U.S. paid Claude users, enabling spending analysis by connecting bank and credit card accounts via Plaid with read-only access.
- The new feature categorizes and analyzes expenses, flags duplicate charges and rising bills, and answers detailed queries about balances, interest, and earnings versus spending.
- Claude's Personal Finance hub, which rivals ChatGPT's finance tools introduced in May, does not use user conversations for model training and contains no ads or sponsored recommendations.
Beta rollout adds account analysis features
As reported by TechCrunch, Anthropic announced on Thursday that Claude is gaining a new tool called Personal Finance, built to help users track spending by connecting bank and credit card accounts through Plaid. The company says the access is read-only, which means the tool cannot move, manage, or invest a user’s money. The feature lets users ask questions about balances, transactions, and spending patterns in everyday language. Anthropic says Claude can total spending across linked accounts, sort it into categories such as rent, utilities, food and drink, and shopping, and answer follow-up questions about whether expenses are higher than usual or whether anything is being overlooked.
Anthropic also says the tool goes beyond basic summaries by reviewing transactions across connected accounts to spot duplicate charges, unexpected fees, and gradually rising bills. Users can also ask broader questions, including whether they are spending more than they earn, while Claude can explain terms such as APR and calculate how much interest they have paid over the past year.
Privacy limits and competitive positioning
Anthropic is presenting the launch as part of a broader push to make Claude a financial companion rather than a source of generic advice. The company says the service has no ads or sponsored recommendations and does not offer its own credit cards, loans, or savings accounts. The launch also places Claude more directly against OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which introduced similar personal finance tools in May. Anthropic says Claude’s access is limited to each connected bank’s name, account name and type, the last four digits of the account number, balances, credit limits, and up to two years of transaction history.
The company adds that conversations in the Personal Finance hub are not used to train its models. The new product arrives as Anthropic expands Claude into industry-specific offerings, after launching Claude for Legal and Claude for Financial Services earlier this year.
CTOS Digital’s cybersecurity incident and its market fallout were previously covered by our publication, as analysts warned that service disruptions could pressure revenue, raise operating costs, and erode customer confidence. We noted estimates that the breach could cut net profit by RM12 million and revenue by RM16 million for the year, with the risk of additional hits if disruptions persisted longer.
