Special Model 41 pistols with sound suppressors supplied to U.S. Air Force crews by Smith & Wesson Brands
Smith & Wesson Brands equipped the U.S. Air Force in March 1967 with 30 custom Model 41 pistols designed for the survival kits of SR-71 Blackbird pilots.
The pistols featured threaded 5-inch barrels, slide locks, so-called sound depressors, and extra magazines. The modifications provided downed pilots a means of quiet self-defense during critical missions. These specialized firearms underscored Cold War-era efforts to increase pilot survival odds during high-risk reconnaissance operations.
Smith & Wesson Brands has recently introduced new Performance Center MP M2.0 pistols with compensators for improved performance, according to a company announcement. The manufacturer also launched its American Guardians Rebate, which provides exclusive savings to military, law enforcement, and first responders, as detailed in a previous report. These initiatives highlight ongoing product development and targeted outreach by the firearms maker.
