Legacy email to SMS gateways enable phishing in trusted threads, Jamf finds
Phishing risk via SMS gateways

Phishing attacks are increasingly exploiting trusted message threads, according to Jamf.

New research highlights that attackers can use outdated email to SMS gateway technology to insert malicious messages into ongoing text conversations previously established with trusted contacts. This technique makes phishing attempts more convincing, as the fraudulent messages appear within existing threads, potentially bypassing user skepticism. Security experts urge organizations and users to be vigilant and to scrutinize even trusted message chains for suspicious content.

Jamf previously reported that 22 percent of breaches last year were tied to stolen credentials, prompting the company to introduce biometric passkeys to address the risk. The company also released a complete mapping of Mac telemetry message fields for security teams. These efforts reflect Jamf’s continued focus on enterprise security challenges.
