Ouster Inc. touts lidar sensors

Ouster Inc. contends that traditional cameras struggle to accurately estimate crowd density when more than three people occupy each square meter, due to limitations in interpreting 2D pixels.

The company states that its OS lidar sensors can natively capture depth by processing millions of data points every second, allowing for precise 3D measurement of crowd positions. This technology enables improved tracking and monitoring in crowded environments, positioning lidar as superior to conventional camera-based systems for real time crowd analysis.

Ouster recently expanded its BlueCity lidar deployment in Utah, bringing coverage to nearly 300 intersections as the company’s stock fell 2.9% that day. The firm has also promoted its ruggedized Blue UAS lidar for integration with autonomous drones, reaching out to Avidrone after a competition earlier this year. These efforts reflect the company’s continued push into real-time sensing and automation applications.
