Nvidia expands beyond chips with Hugging Face deal
Nvidia has agreed to acquire Hugging Face for $12.9 billion, making one of its largest bets yet on software and the infrastructure used to build artificial intelligence models. The transaction would push the world’s dominant AI chipmaker further beyond processors and give it control of one of the most widely used platforms in the open-source AI community.
Highlights
- Nvidia agreed to acquire Hugging Face for $12.9 billion.
- The deal expands Nvidia beyond AI chips and infrastructure.
- Hugging Face is expected to remain an open AI platform.
- It would be Nvidia’s second-largest acquisition.
The agreement confirms a deal that had been anticipated since reports emerged last week, CNBC reported. Nvidia said Hugging Face would remain open to the broader AI ecosystem, an important consideration for developers and companies that use the platform across different models and computing environments.
Nvidia moves further beyond chips
Hugging Face has become an important distribution and development hub for open-source AI. Its platform gives developers and researchers access to models, datasets, and software tools, placing the company at a different layer of the AI industry from the GPUs that underpin Nvidia’s core business.
The acquisition, therefore, broadens Nvidia’s reach across the technology stack. The company already supplies much of the computing hardware used to train and run generative AI systems. Adding Hugging Face would give it a stronger position in the software and developer ecosystem built on top of that infrastructure.
At $12.9 billion, the transaction would rank as Nvidia’s second-largest acquisition. Its biggest was the $20 billion purchase of assets from AI chipmaker Groq in December. Nvidia previously bought Israeli networking specialist Mellanox for nearly $7 billion in 2019.
Open-source AI becomes a strategic asset
The deal also puts Nvidia closer to a community that has helped make open models a major alternative to proprietary AI systems. Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue has been a prominent advocate for open-source development.
That position carries operational risks. Hugging Face recently experienced a hacking incident that raised questions about cybersecurity as AI development tools become more capable. Delangue attributed the breach to engineering mistakes and said the company used an Nvidia version of a Chinese open model while addressing the incident.
Nvidia extends its influence across the AI stack
Nvidia became the world’s most valuable company largely because demand for its GPUs surged during the generative AI boom. Buying Hugging Face would extend that influence from the physical computing layer into the software platforms where developers find, test, and deploy AI models.
The $12.9 billion price also demonstrates the strategic value Nvidia places on controlling more of the infrastructure surrounding AI development. Maintaining Hugging Face as an open platform will be central to how developers, customers, and competitors assess the acquisition as Nvidia expands its role across the industry.
