OpenAI eyes $70 billion annualized revenue in 2026

OpenAI expects its annualized revenue to reach at least $70 billion by the end of 2026, supported by expanding sales to corporate customers. The projection comes as the ChatGPT developer seeks another major financing round and faces growing scrutiny over how artificial intelligence companies report their revenue.

Highlights

  • OpenAI targets a $70 billion revenue run rate.
  • Enterprise sales underpin growth expectations.
  • Revenue comparisons raise valuation questions.

OpenAI's annualized revenue reached approximately $50 billion at the end of September, with the company presenting a higher year-end target during fundraising discussions, Bloomberg reports. The measure extrapolates recent sales into a full-year figure rather than representing revenue already collected over 12 months.

Enterprise demand drives revenue expectations

Corporate adoption is becoming an increasingly important part of OpenAI's business as companies incorporate generative AI into software development, customer service, and internal operations. Enterprise subscriptions and commercial access to AI models provide opportunities for recurring revenue, although the company has not publicly detailed how much each business segment contributes to its latest projection.

The anticipated increase from September's revenue run rate would represent substantial growth over the final quarter. However, annualized revenue can fluctuate with customer usage and contract activity, making it different from audited annual sales. OpenAI declined to comment on the figures, leaving investors to assess the estimates alongside the company's financing plans and expanding infrastructure requirements.

Fundraising talks put valuation under scrutiny

OpenAI is discussing a financing round of at least $30 billion at a valuation of approximately $1.4 trillion before the new investment. The company is also exploring participation from investment funds in the United Arab Emirates, including Abu Dhabi-based MGX. Its previous financing round in March raised $122 billion at a valuation of $852 billion, including the new capital.

The fundraising effort follows reports that some investors had estimated OpenAI's annualized revenue at nearly $70 billion already. Differences in how companies account for sales through cloud providers appear to explain part of the discrepancy. Rival Anthropic reported an annualized revenue figure of $65 billion at the end of July, but differing calculation methods make direct comparisons difficult.

Revenue reporting becomes a market concern

The distinction matters because investors are assigning increasingly large valuations to AI developers before their businesses have established long public financial records. Annualized revenue offers a snapshot of current commercial activity, but it does not reveal profitability, cash generation, or the full cost of operating and expanding AI infrastructure.

Technology stocks declined Thursday after reports challenged earlier revenue estimates for OpenAI. The Nasdaq 100 lost 1.4%, while an index of major semiconductor companies fell 3.4%. The reaction showed how sensitive the wider technology market has become to expectations surrounding privately held AI companies.

OpenAI has also postponed plans for a public listing until at least 2027, while Anthropic could pursue an initial public offering as early as November. The contrasting timelines increase the importance of private fundraising and consistent financial disclosures. For OpenAI, reaching its year-end revenue target would strengthen the case for further investment, but the scale of its valuation means investors will also be watching whether rapid sales growth can translate into a sustainable business.
