Globe urges telecom integration in property projects as building code review advances
Telecom in property projects

Property developers in the Philippines are being pressed to factor telecommunications infrastructure into project plans at an earlier stage to avoid costly post-construction modifications. The push comes as the government reviews the National Building Code of the Philippines, creating an opening to add connectivity requirements for new buildings.

Highlights

  • Globe Telecom urges property developers to incorporate telecommunications infrastructure early in the planning and design phases to avoid costly redesigns and retrofitting.
  • Globe highlights the ongoing review of the National Building Code of the Philippines as an opportunity to mandate telecom-ready facilities in new construction projects.
  • The company commits to collaborating with property developers and industry stakeholders to ensure future projects meet digital connectivity standards and reduce installation constraints.

Telecom planning tied to project design

As reported by BusinessWorld Online, Globe Telecom, Inc. is calling on developers of residential and commercial projects to include telecommunications requirements during planning and design rather than after construction layouts are completed.

In a statement on Sunday, Globe President and Chief Executive Officer Carl R. Cruz said earlier coordination allows both sides to align on what needs to be built from the start, while keeping room for future changes in technology and capacity.

The company said this approach can help cut the need for redesigns and retrofitting when connectivity facilities are installed later in the process. It also said early coordination can help identify installation constraints before final construction plans are set.

Code review opens policy opportunity

Globe said the government's ongoing review of the National Building Code of the Philippines offers a chance to include telecommunications infrastructure in requirements for new buildings.

The company said it has pushed for building standards to cover fiber-ready facilities and in-building connectivity solutions so projects can provide reliable service from the outset, limit retrofit costs and support future digital needs. Globe added that it plans to work with property developers and other industry stakeholders to integrate connectivity requirements into development planning.

In our earlier article on Menara Asia’s Menarabena platform, we looked at how the company aims to digitalise construction procurement by linking industry players with building-material suppliers and centralising certification, documentation, and compliance data. We also noted how collaboration with CIDB Holdings, including an information centre in Shanghai, is intended to streamline product approvals and improve supply-chain efficiency while keeping existing regulatory requirements in place.
