Prediction markets outperform most crypto platforms on user retention
While attracting first-time users is rarely the main hurdle for crypto platforms, keeping them active beyond the initial month remains a persistent problem. New data from prediction markets is bringing that weakness into sharper focus.
Retention figures from Polymarket, compiled by analytics firm Dune in collaboration with market maker Keyrock, tracked how many new users continued trading in the months after their first interaction, reports Cointelegraph.
The study analyzed monthly cohorts across 275 crypto projects, including blockchains, DeFi protocols, wallets, and trading applications. According to the report, Polymarket’s average retention rate outperformed more than 85% of sampled crypto protocols. That result underscores how uncommon sustained engagement still is across the sector. In liquidity-driven markets, weak retention often points to superficial growth rather than durable usage.
Why prediction markets drive repeat engagement
Prediction markets operate differently from many traditional crypto applications, which often rely on short bursts of speculation. Their activity is anchored to real-world events such as elections, sports tournaments, and macroeconomic data releases, giving users recurring reasons to return. This event-based structure encourages more frequent participation without depending heavily on token incentives. As outcomes resolve and new markets open, users are naturally pulled back into the platform.
This dynamic contrasts with many DeFi and trading apps, where engagement often spikes only during periods of extreme volatility. For platforms struggling to maintain activity in calmer markets, prediction markets offer a way to promote habitual use. The model highlights how context-driven engagement can outperform purely price-driven speculation.
Major crypto platforms move into prediction markets
The retention advantage appears to be influencing strategic decisions across the industry. In December, several major crypto players signaled plans to integrate prediction markets into their product offerings. Coinbase and Gemini both moved toward launching prediction market features, alongside wallet provider Phantom and clearing firm Bitnomial Clearinghouse. Bloomberg reported that Coinbase is preparing to introduce tokenized equities and prediction markets, following leaked screenshots shared by researcher Jane Manchun Wong.
Bitnomial also received approval from the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission to offer prediction markets and clearing services. Gemini, meanwhile, rolled out its in-house prediction market across all 50 US states. Together, these moves suggest that prediction markets are increasingly viewed as a tool to deepen user engagement rather than just a niche trading product.
