But we saved everything 🙂.
Aave Labs is phasing out its Family iOS wallet and retiring the Avara umbrella brand, as the DeFi lender refocuses on a tighter product suite aimed at mainstream users.
The shift follows internal lessons about what it takes to onboard “millions of users” into decentralized finance, and comes after Avara’s earlier acquisition of the Family team, Cointelegraph reports.
Aave founder and CEO Stani Kulechov wrote on X: “We are winding down the Family iOS wallet. Family Accounts will continue to power the Aave App as part of Aave’s infrastructure, helping bring millions of users into DeFi.” Aave said the Family team’s work helped shape products including Aave Pro, the Aave App, and Aave’s brand identity.
Kulechov also described a strategic pivot away from general-purpose wallets toward narrower consumer use cases: “Through this journey, we’ve learned that onboarding millions of users requires purpose-built experiences, such as savings, rather than generic, open-ended wallet experiences.”
Kulechov said Avara “is no longer required as we go all in on bringing Aave to the masses.” A separate Avara statement added: “All current and future products, including the Aave mobile app, Aave Pro, and Aave Kit, will operate under Aave Labs.”
Avara also noted: “Additionally, Aave Labs will no longer use the Avara umbrella brand, under which sat the Family brand as well as Lens, which is now being stewarded by Mask.”
The company framed the move as operational simplification: “This change simplifies our brand surface under Aave Labs and focuses our resources on building Aave brand awareness and introducing DeFi to millions of new users globally.”
Aave is the largest DeFi protocol by total value locked, at about $30 billion, and that AAVE traded around $127.40, down roughly 0.7% over 24 hours at the time of publication.
