Crypto market losses from hacks reached $52 million

In March 2025, cryptocurrency hacks and exploits led to losses of $52 million, nearly double the $26.5 million loss in February, according to blockchain security firm PeckShield. These incidents included 20 major attacks that had a significant impact on the crypto market.

Highlights

  • In March 2025, cryptocurrency losses from hacks totaled $52 million.
  • The attack on Resolv Labs was one of the largest, with losses exceeding $25 million.
  • Hacks and exploits continue to rise, posing risks to the growth and stability of crypto projects.

Key incidents of March: Attack on Resolv Labs and Sillytuna's on-chain hit

According to PeckShield, one of the largest incidents was the hack of Resolv Labs, which resulted in the stablecoin issuer losing more than $25 million. The attacker exploited a vulnerability in the USR stablecoin generation contract. Despite Resolv issuing a 72-hour ultimatum for the return of 90% of the stolen funds, the assets were never recovered.

The second incident involved the attack on user X, Sillytuna, who lost around $24 million in Aave Ethereum USDC (aEthUSDC) tokens.

Growing trend of DeFi and cryptocurrency attacks

PeckShield notes, that most of the losses were related to "shadow spreading," meaning secondary losses in DeFi protocols that used the exploited platform.

It is also noted that violence has become part of the strategy for stealing crypto assets, with recent cases of violent attacks on prominent figures in the crypto space for the purpose of seizing their cryptocurrencies.

Impact on the сrypto ecosystem and investor confidence

These incidents highlight the growing threat to cryptocurrency platforms and users. As DeFi activity grows and cryptocurrency investments increase, security has become a crucial issue for market participants.

Companies operating in the cryptocurrency and DeFi space must implement stronger protective measures against hacks and vulnerabilities to maintain investor trust and avoid significant losses.
