U.S. bitcoin ETFs post biggest daily outflow since June as sentiment weakens
Spot bitcoin ETF flows in the U.S. are turning more volatile as the market struggles to regain momentum above recent resistance levels. A sharp withdrawal on Wednesday adds pressure to bitcoin near $83,000 and raises the risk of a deeper pullback if institutional demand continues to fade.
Highlights
- U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs saw $487.1 million net outflows on Wednesday, the largest single-day withdrawal since June 25, as sentiment weakens.
- October's ETF flows are down $165.6 million month-to-date following September's $2.65 billion inflow, with Wednesday's outflow 2.1 standard deviations below the 90-day average.
- Bitcoin trades around $83,000, with analysts citing $80,500-$81,500 as a critical support zone and warning a breakdown could trigger a fall toward $76,000 or $72,000.
ETF flow reversal and market signals
As reported by CoinDesk, citing SoSoValue, U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs record net outflows of $487.1 million on Wednesday, the largest one-day withdrawal since June 25. The move comes just a day after analysts argue that strong inflows into spot ETFs are needed to push bitcoin meaningfully above $87,000, a level that has recently capped gains.Flows have become choppy in recent sessions. After roughly $2.65 billion in net inflows in September, October is down $165.6 million so far, with the past six sessions alternating between modest inflows and outflows.
Data analyzed by CoinDesk shows Wednesday's outflow is about 2.1 standard deviations below the average daily flow of the past 90 days, a period that has averaged roughly $92 million in inflows. That makes the latest move unusually large relative to normal trading patterns.
Price risks build for bitcoin
So far this year, the funds take in a net $717 million, leaving only a limited cushion above flat after cumulative net flows bottom at an outflow of $5.76 billion in July. Since trading began in January 2024, cumulative net inflows stand at $57.33 billion.Bitcoin trades around $83,000 and continues to test the floor that has held since the rally stalls on Sept. 21. Analysts say a sustained break lower would expose the $80,000 level and disrupt the bullish stair-step pattern on the daily chart.
Alex Kuptsikevich, chief market analyst at FxPro, says the $80,500 to $81,500 range includes last month's local highs and the 50-day moving average, making it a key area to watch for either bargain buying or forced selling from leveraged positions. He says a rebound from that zone could bring a quick retest of recent highs, while a failure could trigger a sharp drop toward $76,000 or even $72,000, near the 200-day moving average.
Volatile Treasury notes, possible escalation in U.S.-Iran tensions and the risk of higher oil prices also remain potential headwinds. With spot ETF inflows having provided major support during the August-September rally, weaker demand from those products could prove costly for the crypto market.
In our earlier coverage of September’s emerging-market outflows, we reported that foreign investors pulled $26.3 billion from EM stocks and bonds as rising U.S. Treasury yields and a stronger dollar reduced appetite for risk. The article linked the reversal to a hawkish Fed shift that pushed borrowing costs higher and triggered broad selling pressure, with South Korean equities accounting for a large share of the equity withdrawals.
