Starknet drops over 10% after StarkWare considers Ethereum Layer 2 migration
Starknet drops 10.09% today

Starknet (STRK) dropped 10.09% as investors reacted to recent corporate discussions around a possible transition from Ethereum Layer 2 to an independent Layer 1 blockchain, even as technical conditions remain bullish above all major moving averages. The move looks limited, with STRK holding above key support and several momentum signals warning of short-term exhaustion.

Highlights

  • StarkWare is considering moving Starknet from an Ethereum Layer 2 to its own Layer 1 chain to achieve quantum resistance by 2027.
  • Up to 127 million STRK tokens will unlock on October 15 for early contributors and investors, with price under broad selling pressure.
  • STRK/USD trades in a bullish longer-term trend but faces heavy overbought signals, with a near-term range of $0.1007 to $0.1249 and high volatility.

Quantum resistance targets drive sentiment amid governance uncertainty

StarkWare, the parent company of Starknet, has publicly stated it is considering moving Starknet from an Ethereum-based Layer 2 network to its own independent Layer 1 blockchain. The stated motivation is to achieve quantum resistance ahead of Ethereum, targeting 2027 and enabling faster security upgrades without reliance on Ethereum's base layer. No formal transition proposal or governance vote has yet been released, and the network continues to settle on Ethereum. An upcoming unlock of up to 127 million STRK tokens is scheduled for October 15, allowing further distribution to early contributors and investors, though price action has remained under broader selling pressure.

Anton Kharitonov, expert at Traders Union, sees the 10.09% drop in STRK as a signal of underlying fragility following speculative discussions about a network split from Ethereum. He notes that despite STRK trading above all major moving averages, heavy overbought signals and high intraday volatility expose the price to sudden reversals. Kharitonov points to the pending 127 million token unlock and the lack of a formal Layer 1 migration plan as factors that sustain uncertainty and keep broader selling pressure intact. Momentum indicators suggest buyers have not given up, but any dip below $0.1007 could accelerate losses toward lower bands. "Traders should remain defensive and avoid chasing upside until genuine clarity emerges on Starknet’s strategic direction and post-unlock supply impact," says Kharitonov.
Viktoras Karapetjanc, expert at Traders Union, views Starknet’s exploration of quantum-resistant Layer 1 migration as an innovative move that reveals the network’s growth ambitions. He notes that, despite the recent sell-off, the bullish structure remains intact with the price above key averages and strong buyer interest evident in positive momentum indicators. Karapetjanc highlights the upcoming token unlock as an opportunity for further ecosystem participation and believes these dynamics position the market for upside scenarios over the coming sessions. "I see constructive long-term drivers at work — further growth in STRK is likely as institutional confidence and technical upgrades accelerate adoption," says Karapetjanc.
Jainam Mehta, market strategist, notes that STRK’s current price action balances technical strength with volatile trading and significant overbought risks. He observes that core levels at $0.1007 and $0.1249 will likely define the near-term range, while massive token unlocks and talk of independence from Ethereum contribute to event-driven setups. "A tactical breakout above resistance or a contrarian short on pullbacks could offer attractive risk-adjusted opportunities as sentiment diverges from technical support," says Mehta.

Bullish momentum persists as overbought signals warn of pullback

STRK is trading above the 20-day, 50-day, and 200-day moving averages ($0.0535, $0.0395, and $0.0352), indicating strong bullish momentum across all timeframes. Immediate support is seen at $0.1007 and resistance is identified at $0.1249, with the alignment of the 50-day and 200-day averages further reinforcing the underlying positive trend. Daily indicators such as MACD and ADX suggest a continued buy signal, while oscillators including RSI, Stochastic RSI, and CCI highlight heavy overbought conditions and an increased risk of short-term pullback. Bull/Bear Power (BBP) remains positive, confirming strong buyer interest. The Awesome Oscillator (AO) also supports the prevailing bullish outlook. Despite starting higher, the pair traded near its intraday low after a 10.09% drop and recorded high intraday volatility of 24.03%. Intraday sentiment turned weak as sellers pressured prices post-open and gains reversed, though overall momentum signals indicate that buyers still maintain control.

Earlier, analysts noted that Starknet's consideration of a quantum-resistant Layer 1 transition was driving strong bullish momentum and heightened market activity. The current drop, despite ongoing technical strength and prospective token unlocks, highlights elevated volatility and a key need to monitor for a decisive move beyond the $0.1249 resistance to confirm renewed upside.
