Aptos falls over 10% as Foundation locks and stakes 210 million tokens and supply cap is introduced
Aptos drops 10.19% today after governance

Aptos (APT) dropped 10.19% after the Foundation locked and staked 210 million tokens and governance introduced a supply cap alongside reduced staking rewards. The move contradicts a broadly bullish structure indicated by APT trading above its major moving averages, highlighting that the technical backdrop supports buyers even as price action turns sharply lower.

Locked tokens and reduced issuance ease dilution as defi use grows

The Aptos Foundation permanently locked and staked 210 million APT as of October 12, 2026, with a public commitment that these tokens will not be sold or distributed. On-chain governance also passed Proposal #183, introducing a 2.1 billion APT supply cap, lowering annual staking rewards from 5.19% to 2.6%, and increasing gas fees. The end of the four-year insider vesting period reduced scheduled token issuance by about 60%, while recent reports recorded over $50 million in decentralized finance value locked and more than $50 million committed to trading and AI development, though price action has remained under broader selling pressure.

Anton Kharitonov, expert at Traders Union, takes a skeptical view of Aptos after its recent 10.19% price drop. He notes that, despite the project locking 210 million APT and introducing a supply cap, selling pressure remains pronounced and technical indicators look overextended. Kharitonov believes the sharp reduction in staking rewards and increased gas fees could dampen user interest and network growth. He warns that overbought conditions combined with a near-term gap down signal potential exhaustion among buyers. "With extreme oscillators and technical levels under threat, I strongly advise caution — upside is very limited while risk of a deeper decline is growing."
Viktoras Karapetjanc, expert at Traders Union, maintains a constructive outlook on Aptos following recent governance actions and tokenomics changes. He highlights the positive supply cap decision and permanent locking of foundation tokens as strong signals of long-term project stability. Karapetjanc sees the bullish price structure — with APT trading above all major moving averages — as validation of persistent demand, despite short-term volatility. He expects further inflows as the end of insider vesting reduces future sell pressure and strategic commitments boost ecosystem confidence. "Bullish structure remains intact and investors should look for fresh upside opportunities in the coming sessions."
Sholanke Dele, market strategist, remains cautious amid Aptos' ongoing selling pressure. Dele sees the lowered staking rewards and increased gas fees as a negative shift for sentiment at a time when the project needs to build user trust. He questions whether recent tokenomics changes can offset the visible exhaustion among buyers. "Until APT shows stronger resilience and reverses the intraday downside, I remain unconvinced of a sustained recovery."

Bullish structure endures despite overbought signals and volatility spike

APT/USD is trading above its 20-day ($0.8158), 50-day ($0.6917), and 200-day ($0.7494) moving averages, confirming a bullish structure across short-, medium-, and long-term horizons. The near-term ceiling stands at $0.8614, with initial support at $0.8158; the moving average alignment points to a bearish long-term trend framework despite current outperformance. Momentum indicators signal strong buying interest, as both the MACD and Average Directional Index (ADX) forecast further gains. The Relative Strength Index (RSI), Stochastic RSI, and Commodity Channel Index (CCI) all flag overbought conditions at current levels. Bull/Bear Power (BBP) is positive, confirming intraday dominance by buyers, but also reinforces the overbought signal. Price has slipped $0.0949 or 10.19% on the day after a downside gap of about 3.26%. The pair is trading near session lows with intraday volatility at 6.28%. This reflects pressure after the open and suggests short-term exhaustion among buyers, consistent with the extreme oscillator readings.

Previously it was reported that Aptos faced renewed short-term technical weakness even as strategic investments and ecosystem developments pointed to longer-term growth potential. The current setup adds a new dimension, as structural supply changes now coincide with a bullish technical alignment, making sustained closes above $0.8614 the key trigger for further upside in the near term.
