A recovery in cryptocurrency markets lifts BlackRock's digital asset business in the third quarter after investor withdrawals earlier in 2026. Assets under management rise to $79.6 billion, but the total still remains well below the level the firm held a year earlier.

Highlights

  • BlackRock's digital asset funds saw $7.9 billion in inflows in Q3 2026, reversing $2.2 billion of outflows from the first half.
  • Digital assets under management rose 63% to $79.6 billion at September's end, with $22.9 billion from market gains and $7.9 billion from inflows.
  • Despite the rebound, assets remain 23% below the previous year's $104 billion as market value declines offset $6.3 billion in net new money.

Third-quarter rebound driven by inflows and market gains

As reported by CoinDesk, citing BlackRock's third-quarter earnings report released Wednesday, the asset manager's digital asset funds attract $7.9 billion of inflows in the quarter, reversing roughly $2.2 billion of outflows recorded in the first half of 2026.

BlackRock ends September with $79.6 billion in digital assets under management, up 63% from $48.8 billion at the end of June. The recovery follows a weaker first half, when pressure on Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies weighs on the value of funds tied to those assets.

Market performance accounts for most of the quarterly increase. Of the $30.8 billion added to digital asset assets under management during the quarter, $22.9 billion comes from higher crypto prices, while investor demand contributes the remaining $7.9 billion.

Price dependence remains central to crypto business

Even after the rebound, BlackRock's digital asset holdings remain 23% below the nearly $104 billion it manages a year earlier. Over the past 12 months, the funds still bring in $6.3 billion in net new money, but declines in market value wipe out $30.6 billion over the same period.

The figures underscore how closely the business remains tied to movements in underlying crypto prices, even as investors continue allocating fresh capital. BlackRock, which operates the iShares Bitcoin Trust, IBIT, earns $39 million in quarterly fees and securities lending revenue from its digital asset products, but does not disclose separate asset or flow figures for the bitcoin fund in the earnings release.
