Coinbase x402 micropayments gain traction as AI agent transactions rise
AI boosts crypto micropayments

Autonomous AI software is increasingly using stablecoins to pay for data, computing power and model access in very small increments. More than 138 million transactions have moved through Coinbase's x402 protocol, highlighting early demand for crypto-based machine payments while leaving open questions about how much activity reflects lasting commercial use.

Highlights

  • Chainalysis reports over 138 million Coinbase x402 protocol transactions by AI agents, with more than 87% of payments worth 10 cents or less.
  • U.S.-linked wallets account for 88.1% of x402 payments for AI model inference, while Chinese-linked wallets dominate security and code-analysis payments, especially to AgentLisa.
  • Visa, Mastercard, and Stripe support x402, highlighting stablecoins’ ability to facilitate sub-cent micropayments in AI-driven machine-to-machine commerce.

Transaction growth and market patterns

As first reported by CoinDesk, blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis says AI agents have made more than 138 million transactions through Coinbase's x402 protocol, paying with cryptocurrency for services including data, compute and access to AI models. The figures, released Wednesday, track identifiable x402 transactions rather than the full global market for AI payments.

Chainalysis says more than 87% of analyzed x402 payments are worth 10 cents or less, a sign that stablecoins are well suited to micropayments that traditional card networks struggle to process efficiently. Coinbase has also begun allowing business customers to accept payments from AI agents, expanding the infrastructure for autonomous software to transact without human intervention.

U.S.-linked wallets account for 88.1% of geographically identified payments for AI model inference, compared with 0.1% for Chinese-linked wallets. Eric Jardine, Chainalysis' head of research, tells CoinDesk that one possible explanation is that Chinese developers are more inclined to use open-weight models such as DeepSeek and Qwen, reducing their need to buy metered inference services.

Payments industry backing and regional implications

Visa, Mastercard, Stripe and other payment companies have backed the x402 protocol, giving added credibility to a crypto payment rail aimed at machine-to-machine commerce. Unlike traditional card systems, stablecoins can support transactions worth fractions of a cent, allowing AI agents to purchase narrow units of compute, data and security services at scale.

China shows a different usage pattern in the data. Chinese-linked wallets account for roughly 90% of geographically identified payments for security and code-analysis services, much of it directed toward AgentLisa, an AI-powered smart contract auditing platform.

The activity suggests AI agents are starting to emerge as distinct economic actors on blockchain networks, with each agent functioning as a new kind of user. Even so, the small size of most payments means transaction volume alone does not yet prove the depth of underlying commercial demand.

Our earlier article on AI-based fraud detection in the Philippines explained how industry groups are urging payment and fintech firms to deploy smarter automated defenses as scams become more sophisticated across digital channels. It also highlighted rising cross-border flows tied to fraud and the growing exposure of e-wallet users, underscoring the need for tighter coordination between regulators and financial-service providers to protect high-volume payment activity.
