VanEck pulls Lido ETF

VanEck is pulling back from a planned exchange-traded fund tied to Lido staked Ether, retreating from a product aimed at giving investors exposure to the liquid staking token. The move leaves unclear whether the asset manager will pursue an alternative structure for a staked Ether investment vehicle.

Highlights

  • VanEck Digital Assets filed with the SEC on Wednesday to withdraw its application for a Lido staked Ether (stETH) ETF, without providing reasons.
  • The canceled S-1 registration, initially filed on Oct. 16, 2025, would have enabled investors to access staking rewards through Lido-staked ETH exposure.
  • VanEck's withdrawal sets back the expansion of U.S. crypto ETFs beyond spot Bitcoin and Ether, increasing uncertainty for liquid staking product approvals.

SEC filing outlines product withdrawal

As reported by Cointelegraph, VanEck Digital Assets says in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Wednesday that it "does not intend to proceed with the planned distribution" of the trust's shares.

The asset manager does not explain what drives the decision and does not say whether it plans to replace the proposed fund with another crypto investment product. VanEck initially filed the fund's S-1 registration statement on Oct. 16, 2025.

The proposed exchange-traded fund would have held Lido staked Ether, or stETH, and was expected to accrue certain staking rewards through ownership of the token.

Implications for crypto ETF market

The decision marks a setback for efforts to broaden listed crypto investment products beyond spot Bitcoin and Ether exposure, particularly in the staking segment. Products linked to staking rewards remain a closely watched area for digital asset managers seeking new sources of investor demand.

Without an explanation from VanEck, the withdrawal adds uncertainty around the near-term path for U.S. exchange-traded products built around liquid staking assets. Cointelegraph says it reached out to VanEck Digital Assets for comment.

Our earlier article covered the emergence of fully AI-managed ETFs, a small but growing niche where algorithms handle research and stock selection instead of traditional human portfolio managers. We noted that while some of these funds have outperformed benchmarks early on, adoption remains cautious due to limited track records, higher fees, and concerns about how AI-driven strategies might perform in a market downturn.
