Sonic gateway launches, facilitating FTM to S token swaps for Sonic blockchain users
Sonic Labs has officially launched its Sonic Gateway, enabling users to swap FTM tokens from the Ethereum network to S tokens on Sonic’s mainnet. Announced on Dec. 25, the gateway marks a significant step for Sonic, a newly developed blockchain built to achieve high-speed transaction processing and enhanced security.
The Sonic Gateway facilitates 1:1 swaps of FTM to S tokens while supporting additional assets, including Euro Coin (EURC), USD Coin (USDC), and Wrapped Ethereum (WETH). The mainnet launch on Dec. 13 followed Sonic Labs' vision of creating a network capable of processing 10,000 transactions per second with block finality in under one second.
The S token, Sonic’s native cryptocurrency, shares the same 3.175 billion total supply as Fantom’s FTM tokens. Sonic Labs plans to distribute 190.5 million S tokens to incentivize ecosystem participation. Currently, Sonic boasts a total value locked (TVL) of $62 million, a dramatic rise attributed largely to liquid staking via the Beets protocol.
Meanwhile, Fantom’s network remains active, with $110 million in TVL, despite an 18% decline over the past year. This dual-network approach ensures continuity for Fantom users while Sonic expands its ecosystem.
Advanced features for speed and safety
The Sonic Gateway enhances security through a validator network running both Sonic’s and Ethereum’s Light Clients, ensuring transaction integrity. A fail-safe mechanism allows users to recover bridged assets on Ethereum if the gateway becomes non-functional for over 14 days, safeguarding user custody.
To balance speed and cost, the gateway bundles transactions, resulting in typical delays of 10 minutes from Ethereum to Sonic and one hour in the reverse direction. For expedited processing, users can opt for the "Fast Lane," which bypasses queues for a fee.
As Sonic Labs continues to develop its ecosystem, its focus on speed, security, and compatibility with Ethereum positions it as a promising contender in the blockchain space. The integration of innovative mechanisms like Sonic Gateway underscores the network’s commitment to providing scalable and reliable solutions for digital asset management.
