Tokenization trend spotlights Ondo, Plume in crypto market push
Blockchain-based tokenization is gaining traction as financial firms explore ways to bring stocks, bonds and other real-world assets onto digital networks. The shift is creating new attention around crypto projects that provide the infrastructure for trading and income generation tied to those assets.
Highlights
- Tokenized stocks surged 395% in September, highlighting rapid growth in blockchain-based ownership of stocks, bonds, and real estate assets.
- Ondo Finance lists over 450 tokenized assets with $1.34 billion value locked and collaborates with J.P. Morgan's Kinexys, Mastercard, and Ripple for cross-border fund transfers.
- Plume partners with Apollo and has a $100 million EtherFi plan to expand real-world asset-linked income products, with yields up to 12% but potential credit and liquidity risks.
Tokenization platforms draw investor focus
As outlined by Weiss Ratings, tokenization is emerging as a way to divide ownership of assets such as stocks, bonds and real estate into digital tokens that can trade on blockchain networks with fewer intermediaries and potentially lower costs. The concept is attracting interest from Wall Street because it could make some assets easier to access, faster to settle and available for trading around the clock. The source text points to tokenized stocks surging 395% in September alone, based on an Oct. 9 reference, as a sign that the market is expanding quickly.
Among the projects highlighted, Ondo Finance is positioned as a bridge between traditional finance and crypto markets. Its platform lists more than 450 assets on its tokenized stock offering and reports about $1.34 billion in value locked, while its products include exposure to assets such as U.S. Treasury securities and stocks.
Ondo also announced in May that it is working with J.P. Morgan's Kinexys, Mastercard and Ripple to test cross-border and interbank fund transfers. At the same time, the text notes that access limits remain in place for some products, including the restriction that its tokenized stock platform is not open to U.S. users.
Growth prospects come with token risks
Plume is presented as another project tied to the tokenization buildout, with a focus on tools that help real-world assets move through blockchains and generate income through decentralized finance applications. Its network is aimed at assets including bonds, loans and other forms of credit. The project cites work with Apollo and refers to a $100 million plan with EtherFi to expand income products linked to real-world assets for crypto users. Its website also lists products with stated annual yields of up to 12%, though the text warns that higher returns can come with credit risk, asset value declines and potential liquidity pressures.
The article also stresses that business growth does not automatically translate into higher prices for the ONDO or PLUME tokens. Token performance still depends on factors such as supply, demand and how each token is integrated into the platform's economics.
For the broader market, the argument is that only a small share of Wall Street assets has so far moved on-chain, leaving room for infrastructure providers if tokenization expands further. The analysis frames Ondo as focused on bringing familiar assets into crypto, while Plume is focused on helping those assets generate utility after they arrive on-chain.
Our earlier article on EQT’s acquisition of U.S. real estate firm Stockbridge explained how private capital managers are expanding platforms as fundraising stays tough and asset exits remain slower. We highlighted how the deal builds EQT’s real estate arm after its Coller Capital purchase and fits into a broader wave of consolidation among large private equity and private capital groups seeking scale and diversified strategies.
