Chainlink, LG CNS partner to expand won stablecoin infrastructure in South Korea
Won stablecoin expansion

South Korea is developing a legal framework for local-currency stablecoins as institutional interest in digital assets broadens in the country. Against that backdrop, Chainlink and LG CNS say they are partnering to expand the utility and distribution of won-linked stablecoins while supporting tokenized finance infrastructure.

Highlights

  • Chainlink and LG CNS announced a partnership to expand won-backed stablecoin infrastructure in South Korea’s $68 billion crypto market targeting over 11 million eligible users.
  • LG CNS will integrate Chainlink’s cross-chain and data orchestration infrastructure into its digital asset platform solutions for Korean institutions to advance the country’s digital asset framework.
  • LG CNS, with 186 trillion won in assets and as lead contractor for the Bank of Korea’s Project Hangang, seeks accelerated tokenized securities growth via secure interoperability and real-world data integration.

Partnership targets stablecoin and tokenization buildout

As reported by The Block, Chainlink says the partnership with LG CNS is aimed at advancing infrastructure for South Korea's $68 billion crypto market. The companies say they plan to focus on expanding the utility and distribution of Korean stablecoins, a segment they describe as emerging and one with more than 11 million eligible users.

South Korea currently lacks a clear legal basis for the commercial issuance and trading of stablecoins linked to the won. The government and lawmakers are working on the Digital Asset Basic Act, which would set rules for won stablecoins alongside broader standards for the digital asset sector.

Beyond stablecoins, LG CNS is set to integrate Chainlink's cross-chain, data and orchestration infrastructure into its digital asset platform solutions for Korean institutions. The companies also say they will combine their expertise to help advance the country's digital asset framework.

Institutional role and market implications

LG CNS, the AI transformation and IT services arm of LG Group, positions the partnership within a wider shift toward tokenization in Korea's financial system. In the announcement, Hongkeun Kim, executive vice president and head of the digital business division at LG CNS, says the company aims to help accelerate the growth of Korea's tokenized securities market through secure interoperability and real-world data.

Chainlink operates a decentralized oracle network that connects blockchain-based smart contracts with external data and systems. Its core services center on data feeds, cross-chain interoperability and orchestration tools used across decentralized finance and institutional platforms.

LG Group is one of South Korea's largest business groups, with about 186 trillion won in assets across 63 affiliates and more than $100 billion in combined market capitalization across subsidiaries. LG CNS is also the lead contractor for the Bank of Korea's Project Hangang, the central bank's flagship digital currency initiative.

Our earlier article on the Bank of England’s push for “bare metal” recovery planning explained why regulators want banks to be able to restore critical services even if primary technology stacks are compromised. It also highlighted how AI is raising the scale and complexity of cyberattacks, prompting supervisors to demand deeper operational resilience and more robust recovery options across the financial system.
