Yen demand surges as BOJ rate hike bets drive positioning

Strong demand for the yen has been spurred by rising expectations of a Bank of Japan interest rate hike at its upcoming September 17–18 meeting, as investors adjust positions ahead of potential changes in monetary policy. This anticipation has increased the relative appeal of the yen, leading to shifts in currency pair positioning against the pound. The recent trend has been reinforced by hawkish remarks from Bank of Japan officials, which have heightened market conviction of an imminent tightening cycle, according to Fxstreet.

Selling momentum builds as technical barriers contain gains

Technically, GBP/JPY remains below the MA-20 and MA-50 on the hourly chart, and trades well beneath the MA-200 on the daily timeframe. The Ichimoku Kijun at ¥209.06 is serving as immediate resistance. Momentum indicators are consistently negative: MACD and ADX are aligned to a sell bias, with RSI deeply oversold at 24.2, CCI also oversold, and Bull/Bear Power indicating clear seller dominance. Stoch RSI is neutral, and the Awesome Oscillator lacks a clear directional signal. These factors collectively suggest pronounced selling momentum and limited upside potential in the immediate term.

Range-bound outlook persists as reversal risk remains subdued

Looking ahead, GBP/JPY is expected to remain range-bound between ¥206.21 and ¥209.65 over the next one to two trading days, reflecting typical volatility bands relative to current levels. The probability of a sustained upward rebound in this period is low, given current momentum readings and order flow. A decisive break above ¥209.06 would be required to trigger a bullish reversal scenario, while a move below ¥206.21 could signal further downside, expanding the recent loss profile.

Anton Kharitonov, expert at Traders Union, sees GBP/JPY under pressure due to persistent yen demand and clear technical weakness. He notes that recent hawkish remarks from Bank of Japan officials have strengthened market conviction of an imminent policy shift. Downside momentum remains dominant unless ¥209.06 is reclaimed. "Until GBP/JPY can close above ¥209.06, my outlook stays strictly defensive and I do not trust any intraday rebounds."

In a recent review, analysts emphasized the persistent downward momentum in GBP/JPY, underscored by sustained seller dominance and negative technical signals. The current technical landscape reinforces this bearish outlook, with traders advised to closely monitor the ¥206.21 support for signs of renewed downside risk in the near term.
