Highlights

  • The yen weakened after the Bank of Japan's September meeting summary did not indicate an imminent rate hike.
  • Geopolitical risk aversion and differing central bank policies increased U.S. dollar demand and pressured the Canadian dollar, causing CAD/JPY to trade within a range.
  • CAD/JPY trades with a short-term bullish bias, expected to consolidate between ¥110.61 and ¥111.73 with a 78% probability of an upward move.

Yen weakens as Bank of Japan signals policy hold amid risk aversion

The primary driver for the Canadian Dollar vs Yen has been the Bank of Japan's September meeting summary, which disappointed investors by showing no clear signal for an imminent rate hike and prompted fresh yen weakness, according to Bloomberg. This central bank communication affected the currency cross by reducing the likelihood of rapid monetary tightening in Japan, thereby supporting downside in the yen. Meanwhile, data from Fxstreet highlights how heightened geopolitical risk aversion and divergent central bank policies have strengthened U.S. dollar demand and put pressure on the Canadian dollar in September, shaping the broader range-bound behavior in CAD/JPY.

Bullish momentum strengthens as short-term levels hold above support

On the hourly chart, CAD/JPY is above both the MA-20 and MA-50 but remains below the MA-200 on the daily timeframe. The Ichimoku Kijun level at ¥110.9 acts as immediate support. Momentum readings are robust: MACD and ADX are positioned in bullish territory, while RSI prints a buy signal near overbought levels, with both CCI and Stochastic RSI also indicating overbought conditions. Bull/Bear Power reflects buyer dominance in intraday trading, and the Awesome Oscillator further confirms the underlying upward bias.

Volatility band narrows as consolidation expected with breakout risks

Over the next 2–3 trading days, CAD/JPY is expected to trade in a range between ¥110.61 and ¥111.73, based on a projected 78% probability for an upward move and 22% for a decline. The baseline scenario suggests price will consolidate within this volatility band relative to current levels. A decisive breakout above the upper boundary would establish a bullish scenario, while a sustained move below the ¥110.9 support would trigger a shift toward a bearish outlook.

Viktoras Karapetjanc, analyst at Traders Union, highlights that CAD/JPY price action is driven by central bank policy signals and shifting global risk sentiment. He notes the persistent yen weakness due to Bank of Japan’s dovish stance. At the same time, demand for safe havens and strong U.S. dollar are capping Canadian dollar gains. Karapetjanc sees near-term consolidation but expects upside attempts to dominate as long as support holds. "A constructive bias prevails as macro trends align, and I believe CAD/JPY could press the upper end of its recent range if supportive factors persist."

Earlier, analysts noted that persistent downside momentum and a lack of technical support were keeping CAD/JPY under bearish pressure. The latest data, however, indicate a notable shift as short- and medium-term indicators now favor buyers, making a sustained move above ¥111.73 a key level to watch for confirmation of further upside.
