Highlights

  • Pound Sterling has gained after UK GDP data exceeded expectations, indicating strong economic recovery relative to major peers.
  • Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey has stated that UK policy rates may remain elevated for longer, raising Sterling's yield appeal.
  • GBP/USD shows strong short- and medium-term bullish momentum, with price expected to trade in a $1.3275 to $1.3409 range as overbought indicators signal limited downside risk.

Sterling strength underpinned by GDP surprise and hawkish BOE signals

Recent gains in Pound Sterling have been driven primarily by the release of stronger-than-expected UK Gross Domestic Product data, underscoring the resilience of the UK's economic recovery and supporting underlying demand for Sterling, according to FXStreet. This robust growth backdrop improves the currency's attractiveness at a time when investors weigh relative performance among major economies. Adding to the supportive environment, hawkish remarks from Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey have reinforced market perceptions that UK policy rates may remain higher for longer, further increasing Sterling's relative yield appeal. Data and commentary from both FXStreet and Globalbankingandfinance point to firm economic and policy factors behind current market dynamics.

Buyer dominance persists as GBP/USD nears overbought territory

On the GBP/USD hourly chart, the pair is positioned above both the MA-20 and MA-50, while remaining below the long-term MA-200 at $1.3402. Immediate technical support is provided by the Ichimoku Kijun at $1.3283. Among momentum indicators, MACD, ADX, and Bull/Bear Power all show intraday buyer dominance, and the Awesome Oscillator aligns with the current upward move. However, oscillators such as RSI, Stochastic RSI, and CCI are overbought, highlighting a potential for a pullback or consolidation after the latest gains.

Consolidation favored as momentum and resistance cap near-term range

For the next 2 to 3 trading days, GBP/USD is likely to remain confined within a volatility band between $1.3275 and $1.3409. The dominant scenario is for sideways consolidation inside this range, given intraday momentum and overbought oscillators. A sustained break above $1.3409 could trigger further upside extension. Alternatively, a drop below the immediate $1.3283 support would open the way for a deeper short-term retracement, though the probability of this outcome is assessed as low.

Viktoras Karapetjanc, expert at Traders Union, sees GBP/USD supported by strong UK GDP data and clear signals from the Bank of England. He notes that recent macro data and central bank commentary have improved sentiment and fundamentally strengthen Sterling's appeal. Karapetjanc expects the pair to consolidate within the $1.3275–$1.3409 range in the near term, given current technicals and macro momentum. "Sterling remains well-backed for now, and a clear catalyst could open the door for a further move higher if $1.3409 breaks decisively."

Earlier, analysts noted that Pound Sterling's gains against the US dollar were constrained by persistent technical resistance and mixed momentum signals. The latest positive UK GDP surprise and continued policy support add fresh strength to the bullish case, making a sustained move above $1.3409 the key level to watch for a potential upside breakout.
