Forint prospects improve as euro adoption plans drive bond gains

Hungary has formalized its medium-term economic framework aimed at meeting the euro adoption criteria by 2030, marking a clear policy commitment to fiscal and regulatory reform, according to Commerzbank. This shift sets a firmer trajectory for fiscal consolidation and prospects for the forint as the country and central bank prepare for potential participation in the Exchange Rate Mechanism II. Meanwhile, Hungarian government bonds have attracted gains following the release of Hungary’s four-year euro adoption roadmap, reflecting investor response to policy stability and fiscal targets, as highlighted by Societe Generale.

Seller momentum strengthens as USD/HUF stays below key averages

On the technical front, USD/HUF is trading beneath both the MA-20 and MA-50 on the main chart, while maintaining a position above the MA-200 on the daily timeframe. The nearest resistance is identified at the Ichimoku Kijun level of Ft329.1566. MACD is showing a Sell signal, and ADX remains Neutral; RSI also tilts towards a Sell bias. CCI and Bull/Bear Power indicate oversold conditions and reinforce strong seller momentum in the intraday context. Stochastic RSI is Neutral, while the Awesome Oscillator points to additional downside, in line with subdued volatility in recent sessions.

Downside risk rises as range trading dominates near-term outlook

Over the next two to three trading days, USD/HUF is expected to fluctuate between Ft325.5866 and Ft328.8588, representing a typical volatility band relative to current levels. The probability of a move higher is described as very low, while further declines are seen as highly likely under prevailing market conditions. For the short term, the baseline scenario is for range-bound trading. A bullish scenario would require a sustained break above the immediate resistance at the Kijun, whereas a decisive break below the current support could accelerate further losses.

Viktoras Karapetjanc, Senior Analyst at Traders Union, sees Hungary’s updated economic roadmap and policy commitment as a constructive backdrop for market sentiment. He notes that firm steps toward euro adoption and fiscal consolidation are reinforcing investor confidence, as evidenced by interest in government bonds. Near-term, Karapetjanc expects the forint to remain stable within its range as technicals point to subdued volatility and strong seller momentum. In his view, the medium-term reform signals are notably positive for HUF resilience. "If policymakers stay on course, I expect the forint to benefit longer-term from structural reforms and deepening fiscal discipline."

Earlier, analysts noted that USD/HUF maintained a bullish technical structure supported by strong upward momentum and persistent buying interest. The current shift in technical signals now highlights a downside risk, with the focus turning to whether USD/HUF can sustain support above its long-term average or if further declines towards the lower end of its short-term range will materialize in the days ahead.
