Highlights

  • RBA Deputy Governor Andrew Hauser warns that public confidence in the central bank's inflation control is diminishing.
  • Weakening trust in monetary policy effectiveness could increase the long-term cost of reducing inflation for the Australian economy.
  • AUD/LKR remains pressured by sellers with bearish momentum signals, expected to trade between LKR230.04 and LKR232.36 in the next few days.

Central bank credibility concerns drive negative sentiment for AUD

Reserve Bank of Australia Deputy Governor Andrew Hauser cautioned on Thursday that public confidence in the central bank's ability to control inflation is eroding, as reported by Investing.com. Hauser warned that diminished trust could make efforts to reduce inflation more costly, highlighting growing concerns about the effectiveness of current monetary policy. This backdrop influences sentiment on the Australian Dollar, with market participants weighing the potential consequences for the currency and its exchange rate against the Sri Lankan Rupee.

Persistent downside as bear signals meet emerging divergence

AUD/LKR is positioned below the SMA-20, SMA-50, and SMA-200, reflecting persistent downward momentum. The Ichimoku Kijun at LKR232.6 acts as immediate resistance, capping upside attempts. Momentum indicators including MACD and ADX are presently bearish, while RSI, Stochastic RSI, and CCI all register in their respective oversold zones. Bull/Bear Power is negative at -1.12, confirming seller control over intraday momentum, and the Awesome Oscillator also aligns with this selling trend. Despite these strong bear signals, oversold oscillator readings suggest a short-term divergence could emerge.

Directional risk favors further downside amid constrained volatility

In the near term, AUD/LKR is expected to fluctuate within a narrow corridor between LKR230.04 and LKR232.36, consistent with recent low volatility. The probability of an upward move is relatively low at 22%, indicating continued downside risk is more likely. In a baseline scenario, price action is seen trading sideways within this band. Should the pair break above the Kijun resistance level at LKR232.6, a bullish reversal would become possible, while an intensification of bearish momentum could result in a move below LKR230.04.

Viktoras Karapetjanc, expert at Traders Union, sees short-term downside risk for AUD/LKR as market confidence in Australian monetary policy remains under pressure. He notes that the currency is trading below major moving averages and bearish momentum is reinforced by weak sentiment following recent RBA commentary. However, deeply oversold indicators suggest a technical rebound remains possible if resistance at LKR232.6 is broken. Karapetjanc adds: "While sellers are in control now, any improvement in sentiment or policy clarity could quickly spark a corrective rally in AUD/LKR."

Earlier, analysts noted that AUD/LKR was experiencing persistent downward pressure amid mixed technical signals and subdued volatility. The current analysis reinforces this bearish outlook and highlights that a decisive move below LKR230.04 could signal further downside risk for the pair.
