Top 5 altcoins of September: What sent them soaring
Best cryptocurrencies of September

September gave altcoin investors plenty to celebrate. According to CryptoRank, large-cap tokens gained an average of 27.5%. But the month's biggest winners went far beyond that, with the leader more than tripling.

Altcoins finally get their moment

September's gains were unusually widespread. CryptoRank found that 79 of 86 large-cap altcoins finished the month higher, while 66 outperformed Bitcoin, which gained 7%. That made the month less about one fashionable corner of crypto and more about investors becoming willing to take risks across the market. The September rally also capped a strong third quarter for many large-cap altcoins.

The biggest winners had little in common. Some benefited from major project developments, while others caught broader narratives or simply attracted traders looking for the next fast-moving token.

Moonriver (MOVR): +178%

Moonriver was one of September's standout performers, gaining over 178% as its rally accelerated dramatically in the final days of the month. The smart-contract platform provides an Ethereum-compatible environment on Kusama, allowing developers to deploy Ethereum-style applications while connecting them with the broader Polkadot and Kusama ecosystems.

MOVR attracted renewed attention late in September as speculative momentum picked up. The token surged particularly sharply on Sept. 29 and 30, with trading activity jumping alongside the price. That late-month breakout turned what had been a relatively gradual September advance into one of the month's strongest altcoin rallies.

NEAR Protocol (NEAR): +182%

NEAR gained 182% in September, climbing from $1.9 at the start of the month to $5.3 on Sept. 30. The token also reached a peak of $5.5 on Sept. 27. The layer-1 blockchain was built to make decentralized applications easier and faster to use, but it has increasingly positioned itself around artificial intelligence, cross-chain transactions, and its vision of “user-owned AI.”

September gave traders several reasons to revisit the project. NEAR launched Stateless Validation on mainnet, reducing hardware requirements for validators, while its Confidential Intents ecosystem passed $70 million in value locked and triggered the first milestone of an incentive program. Those developments landed as investors were already returning to altcoins and showing renewed interest in crypto projects tied to AI.

Bitway (BTW): +211%

Bitway spent much of September climbing. Its BTW token gained 211% for the month, after already emerging as one of the market's stronger performers earlier in the quarter.

The project operates Bitway Ledger, a proof-of-stake blockchain where BTW is used for gas and governance. During one week in mid-September, BTW rose another 43%, even though trading volumes remained below peaks seen earlier in the summer, suggesting momentum was playing an increasingly important role.

Later in the month, BTW received another boost from Binance Wallet's Booster Season 5 campaign and reached a record $1.4. The rally stood out partly because there was no major protocol upgrade or listing announcement behind the final surge, leaving speculative demand as an important part of the story.

Akedo (AKE): +294%

Akedo brought one of crypto's favorite themes into the ranking: AI. The project is building infrastructure for AI-powered games and autonomous agents, with AKE used across its ecosystem.

The token surged 294% in September, but the path was anything but smooth. AKE rose another 70% on Sept. 15 before jumping 117% in a single day on Sept. 18. Just days later, it was recording double-digit daily losses as traders took profits. The extreme swings reflected strong speculative interest in a relatively young token combining two popular crypto narratives, AI and gaming.

Quant (QNT): +319%

September's winner also had the clearest catalyst. Quant's QNT token gained 319%, with much of the rally arriving during an extraordinary final week.

Quant builds technology that allows different blockchains and traditional financial systems to communicate. That technical proposition gained a much more concrete use case on Sept. 24, when The Clearing House selected Quant to power its On-Chain Money Initiative, a new network designed to let financial institutions clear and settle tokenized deposits.

The scale helped explain the market's reaction. The Clearing House operates U.S. payment networks that process more than $2 trillion each day, and Quant will provide technology connecting the new system with existing payment rails including RTP and CHIPS. The network is expected to become available to participating financial institutions in the first half of 2027.

QNT jumped from around $60 in September to nearly $300 by the end of the month as the partnership turned Quant's long-standing interoperability pitch into a concrete role in U.S. banking infrastructure.

What September's winners have in common

There is no single theme connecting the five. Quant had a major institutional catalyst, NEAR combined new network developments with the AI narrative, Moonriver attracted renewed speculative interest, Akedo rode enthusiasm around AI and gaming, and Bitway's rally became increasingly driven by momentum.

What they did share was a favorable market. September gave investors enough confidence to venture further beyond Bitcoin and the largest altcoins, allowing very different stories to catch fire at the same time. Some rallies had obvious catalysts behind them, while others showed how quickly prices can move once speculative momentum reaches smaller tokens.
