AI startup Anthropic seeks $20 billion in new funding round
U.S.-based AI and large language model startup Anthropic has reportedly increased its fundraising target to $20 billion.
According to the Financial Times, Anthropic — the developer of the popular AI assistant Claude and the increasingly widely used Claude Code — decided to double its fundraising goal amid growing investor interest.
Late last year, reports indicated that Anthropic had hired legal advisers in preparation for a potential IPO that could take place as early as this year. In September, the company announced it had raised $13 billion, making it one of the most valuable private companies in the AI sector, which is estimated to be worth $183 billion.
Now, sources say the amount of venture capital Anthropic plans to raise has been increased from $10 billion to $20 billion. The funding round, which is expected to close soon, would reportedly value the company at $350 billion.
Sequoia Capital — which also invests in OpenAI — is expected to participate in the round, alongside a Singaporean sovereign wealth fund and investment management firm Coatue.
AI helps navigate government services
On the same day, January 27, Anthropic announced it had been selected by the UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) to develop and pilot a specialized AI assistant for GOV.UK.
The AI assistant will help users navigate government services and provide personalized guidance. Its initial primary use case will focus on employment, including assistance with job searches, access to training opportunities, understanding available support, and navigating public resources.
