UK standards probe targets Farage over Harborne gift disclosure
Farage faces funding probe

Scrutiny of political funding and disclosure rules in UK politics is intensifying after Nigel Farage acknowledged receiving about 5 million pounds from crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne before entering the 2024 Clacton race. The dispute centers on whether the payment qualified as a personal exempt gift or should have been registered under Commons rules covering benefits received in the year before election.

Highlights

  • Conservatives and Labour referred Nigel Farage to Parliamentary Standards Commissioner over a £5 million gift from Christopher Harborne in 2024, citing possible disclosure breaches.
  • UK government imposed a March moratorium on crypto donations to political parties after Harborne's £9 million to Reform in late 2023 and BitMEX's Ben Delo giving £4 million in 2024, aiming to prevent foreign influence.
  • In March, Farage invested £215,000 via Thorn In The Side in Stack BTC for a 6.31% stake, coinciding with intensifying scrutiny of crypto’s role in UK politics.

Disclosure dispute and timing

As first reported by The Guardian, the Conservatives have referred Farage to Parliamentary Standards Commissioner Daniel Greenberg over the 5 million pound payment, while Labour also says he may have breached House of Commons rules.

Farage confirmed the gift in an interview with the Daily Telegraph, saying it was intended to keep him "safe and secure for the rest of my life" after a milkshake was thrown at him in 2019 and a firebomb attack on his home last year. Harborne, a Thailand-based businessman with a 12% stake in stablecoin issuer Tether, made the payment in 2024 before Farage announced his Clacton candidacy in early June and later won the seat in July.

A Reform UK spokesman says the payment is a personal unconditional gift made before Farage was elected and that his decision to stand for Parliament is entirely unrelated. The party also says it is confident everything has been declared in accordance with the rules.

The Commons code of conduct requires new MPs to register benefits received in the 12 months before their election and says any benefit should be registered if there is doubt. Reform argues the payment falls within an exemption for purely personal gifts, while the Conservatives are asking whether any of the funds supported political activity rather than security.

Crypto funding pressure on UK politics

Harborne also gave Reform 9 million pounds late last year, the largest single donation to a UK political party from a living person on record. Earlier this month, BitMEX co-founder Ben Delo said in an op-ed that he has given Reform 4 million pounds since the start of the year.

The growing role of digital-asset money in politics is drawing a stronger policy response. In March, the UK government imposed an immediate moratorium on crypto donations to political parties, citing the Rycroft review's warning that digital assets could be used to channel foreign money into UK politics, and said the ban will be written into the Representation of the People Bill with criminal penalties for non-compliance.

That same month, Farage invested 215,000 pounds in Stack BTC, a London-listed bitcoin treasury company chaired by former Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng. The investment, made through his vehicle Thorn In The Side, gave him a 6.31% stake.

In our earlier article on Reform UK’s crypto-linked funding scrutiny, we detailed how Nigel Farage said he received a roughly £5 million personal gift in 2024 from Christopher Harborne, a major Tether stakeholder, to cover lifetime security costs. We also noted that Harborne had already donated around £12 million to Reform UK, raising questions about how such payments are structured and disclosed as the UK moves to tighten rules around political donations connected to digital assets.
