General Motors, Lockheed Martin form defense manufacturing partnership in U.S.
GM & Lockheed boost defense

As U.S. defense production expands, General Motors is partnering with Lockheed Martin to scale manufacturing and increase munitions-related output. The collaboration remains in its early stages under a memorandum of understanding and comes as Washington presses major automakers to help strengthen the defense industrial base.

Highlights

  • General Motors' GM Defense and Lockheed Martin formed a partnership, focusing on scaled U.S. munitions production with support from the Department of Defense.
  • Lockheed Martin plans $9 billion investment by 2030 to modernize 20 facilities, while GM will spend $7 billion on U.S. research and development, boosting defense manufacturing capacity.
  • Rising demand for U.S. defense parts, stockpile pressures from wars in Ukraine and Iran, and White House manufacturing initiatives are driving automakers like GM deeper into defense supply chains.

Partnership centers on scaled munitions production

As reported by CNBC, General Motors said Tuesday that its GM Defense unit is entering a partnership with Lockheed Martin to expand production capabilities, with the effort facilitated by the U.S. Department of Defense. Bruce Brown, vice president of strategy at GM Defense, said the collaboration will focus on munitions and on applying the automaker’s engineering, digital development, supply chain and large-scale manufacturing experience.

Executives from both companies said the agreement is aimed at high-rate manufacturing and broader production capacity as demand for defense parts rises. Lockheed Martin COO Frank St. John said it is still too early to specify which projects will receive investment, and both sides said they still need to define the scope for potential future contracts.

St. John said the companies will explore improving production readiness, building scalable manufacturing environments, strengthening supply chains and increasing resilience, while also using advanced manufacturing and design approaches to improve efficiency and speed deliveries. He added that Lockheed Martin is investing $9 billion through 2030 to modernize 20 facilities and supply bases, while GM plans to spend $7 billion on research and development in the U.S., according to Brown.

Defense push adds momentum for GM Defense

GM Defense, reestablished in 2017, is one of the automaker’s newer but fast-growing business segments, with customers including the U.S. Army, Secret Service and NASA. The unit also builds on General Motors’ earlier manufacturing role during World War II, when the company produced tanks for the country.

The partnership arrives as President Donald Trump pushes for more domestic manufacturing and reshoring, and as U.S. defense stockpiles come under pressure from wars in Ukraine and Iran. Brown said the collaboration reflects a need not only for advanced technology but also for reliable speed, scale and resilience in the U.S. defense industrial base.

The White House has also held discussions with Ford and GM about how automakers can better support the country’s defense industry. That wider policy backdrop suggests traditional vehicle manufacturers may play a larger role in defense supply chains as production demands increase.

We previously reported on Renault’s plan to manufacture Thales’ Toutatis loitering munitions drones, with production targeted at up to 1,000 units per month starting as early as next year. The deal highlights how carmakers are leveraging large-scale industrial expertise to ramp up defense output faster and at lower cost as European military demand rises, alongside Renault’s other drone-related partnerships.
