Nakusp Hot Springs growth boost

Tourism growth planning at Nakusp Hot Springs is moving ahead as British Columbia funds early-stage work tied to visitor capacity and local infrastructure. The support is aimed at helping the Village of Nakusp assess accommodation demand and prepare water and wastewater upgrades needed for future expansion.

Highlights

  • British Columbia is providing nearly $86,000 through the Rural Economic Diversification and Infrastructure Program to support Nakusp Hot Springs growth planning and infrastructure upgrades.
  • The funding covers visitor demand analysis, accommodation capacity planning, wastewater system design, and potable water upgrades to enable future expansion.
  • Upon completion, Nakusp Hot Springs expansion is expected to create four full-time, one part-time, and one seasonal job, boosting regional tourism and economic activity.

Nakusp expansion planning and infrastructure scope

As reported by BC Gov News, the Province is providing nearly $86,000 through the Rural Economic Diversification and Infrastructure Program to help the Village of Nakusp plan for growth at Nakusp Hot Springs.

The funding supports analysis of visitor demand and accommodation needs to determine how many new units may be required at the site. It also covers engineering and design work for a new wastewater treatment system and upgrades to the village's potable water infrastructure, which are needed to expand accommodation capacity.

Provincial officials say the initiative fits within British Columbia's Look West: Tourism Sector Action Plan and is intended to support destination infrastructure, year-round tourism and long-term sector resilience. Local officials describe the hot springs as a community-owned tourism asset that has supported economic activity in the area for more than 50 years.

Regional tourism and employment impact

Higher visitor capacity is expected to bring more customers to businesses across the Kootenays and strengthen tourism-related economic activity in Nakusp and surrounding communities. When the expansion is complete, the initiative is expected to create four full-time jobs, one part-time job and one seasonal job.

The Province says the broader Rural Economic Diversification and Infrastructure Program is designed to support economic diversification, resilience and infrastructure development in rural and Indigenous communities across British Columbia. Since 2022, British Columbia says it has invested $156.5 million through the program for 525 projects across the province, with an estimated 7,500 jobs created in rural communities.

In our earlier article on Ontario’s Building Faster Fund payment to Sault Ste. Marie, we explained how the province is directing C$600,000 to the city after it exceeded its 2025 housing target, with the money aimed at housing-enabling infrastructure and continued residential development. We also outlined Ontario’s broader push to speed up homebuilding, including measures to streamline development, reduce charges, and temporarily remove HST on new homes to lower costs and support construction activity.
