United Airlines outlook revised to positive by Fitch, BB+ ratings affirmed
United Airlines outlook upgrade

United Airlines secures a more favorable credit outlook as Fitch revises the company’s rating outlook to Positive from Stable while affirming its long-term issuer ratings at BB+. The move reflects expectations that leverage and margins continue improving despite pressure from higher jet fuel costs and heavy fleet renewal spending.

Highlights

  • Fitch revises United Airlines' outlook to Positive from Stable, affirms BB+ ratings, citing net leverage target below 2x and strong margin performance versus peers.
  • Fitch forecasts United's gross leverage rising to about 4x by year-end 2026 and net leverage at or below 2.5x, constrained by jet fuel costs and fleet capex.
  • Fitch upgrades United's 2016-1 class AA EETC to A+ and cites broad travel demand and resilient aircraft values driving collateral strength across multiple issuances.

Credit outlook and balance sheet trajectory

As reported by Fitch Ratings, the agency changes the Rating Outlook for United Airlines Holdings, Inc. and United Airlines, Inc. to Positive from Stable and keeps their Long-term Issuer Default Ratings at 'BB+'. Fitch says the revision is tied to United's commitment to a strong balance sheet, including a net leverage target below 2x, alongside margin performance that compares well with peers.

Fitch expects the airline's financial profile to keep strengthening, supported by liquidity and a large pool of unencumbered assets. It forecasts gross leverage trending to the upper 2x range and net leverage to the upper 1x range in 2027, levels that align with its positive rating sensitivities.

The agency says the rating case is still constrained by near-term headwinds from jet fuel prices and by substantial capital spending tied to fleet renewal, which limits free cash flow generation. Fitch adds that the outlook could return to Stable if expected improvement in margins and leverage does not materialize over the next 12 to 18 months.

In its detailed assessment, Fitch says United's gross leverage rises to about 4x at year-end 2026 from 3.7x at year-end 2025, a modest increase given the scale of fuel cost pressure. At the same time, net leverage is expected to remain at 2.5x or below at year-end 2026, helped by a sizeable liquidity buffer and potential debt prepayments as fuel pressures ease.

Fleet-backed debt and airline demand support

Fitch also upgrades United's 2016-1 class AA certificates to 'A+' from 'A' and affirms the remaining class AA, class A and class B EETC tranches across multiple issuances. The agency says those actions reflect continued strength in collateral aircraft values, with stressed loan-to-value ratios declining by several percentage points across United's EETC portfolio because aircraft values depreciate less than previously expected.

Among the affirmed securities, Fitch keeps ratings unchanged on UAL 2019-2, UAL 2019-1, UAL 2018-1, UAL 2016-2 and UAL 2014-2 tranches, while raising only the 2016-1 class AA notes. The collateral performance is supported by broad-based travel demand, which the agency says continues to underpin asset values in the aviation finance market.

Fitch also points to a supportive demand backdrop for the wider U.S. airline sector. United and Delta both recently report double-digit unit revenue improvement in the second quarter, while passenger throughput over the Fourth of July holiday weekend remains essentially flat year over year despite higher fares, indicating consumers continue prioritizing travel spending.

Business travel demand also strengthens, with Amex GBT reporting solid booking growth through the second quarter of 2026 after a softer period in 2025. Fitch says downside risks remain if fuel prices stay elevated or consumer pressure intensifies later in the year.

In our earlier article on American Airlines (AAL) shares falling under renewed selling pressure, we noted that the move was driven largely by bearish technical momentum even as investors weighed upcoming Q2 2026 results and scrutiny of debt and guidance. The piece also highlighted operational updates such as plans to restart nonstop U.S.–Venezuela flights, while pointing to key short-term support and resistance levels that traders were watching for a potential shift in direction.
