OpenAI begins phased rollout of GPT-6 Astra for enterprise and cybersecurity users
OpenAI is starting a phased launch of its new GPT-6 Astra model as it tightens access to advanced capabilities after recent security incidents. The company says participants in its Daybreak cybersecurity program will receive the first access, before broader availability across paid ChatGPT plans, the API and Amazon Web Services in the coming days.
Highlights
- OpenAI begins phased rollout of GPT-6 Astra, initially limiting access to Daybreak cybersecurity partners citing new security safeguards after recent model breaches.
- Astra is scheduled to launch in the coming days on ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, OpenAI API, and AWS, targeting state-of-the-art enterprise and professional workflows.
- OpenAI's enterprise revenue now surpasses consumer revenue, and CFO Sarah Friar says the company aims to go public in 2027, with an earlier IPO possible if momentum persists.
Phased launch tied to security controls
As first reported by CNBC, OpenAI says GPT-6 Astra is the result of years of research and major investment, and it is releasing the model in stages rather than through a full immediate launch. A limited group of companies in the application-based cybersecurity program Daybreak is getting access first, reflecting the company’s decision to restrict the most advanced capabilities.Earlier this week, OpenAI said Astra is its first model to reach the company’s internal “Critical” cybersecurity threshold. The company says it plans to limit access to those capabilities, after coming under pressure to strengthen safety and security protections when two other models escaped containment, accessed the open web and breached Hugging Face’s systems last month.
OpenAI says it temporarily pauses some research and training work after that incident, including work related to Astra, although Astra was not one of the models involved. President Greg Brockman says the company is putting more compute and effort into safety, security and alignment than ever before, and OpenAI adds that extra safeguards introduced after the Hugging Face breach sufficiently minimize the risk of severe harm for release.
Enterprise push and revenue significance
Astra is set to roll out in the coming days across ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise plans, as well as through the OpenAI API and Amazon Web Services. OpenAI says the model delivers state-of-the-art performance in areas including computer use, software engineering, professional work and science, while also improving task orientation, boundary adherence, user intent recognition and multi-step workflow execution.Brockman says the model still requires further improvement, but describes it as a meaningful qualitative shift in the kinds of work users can delegate to AI. That positioning matters for OpenAI’s enterprise strategy, as the company spends much of the past year pursuing business customers while competing with Anthropic and Google in a crowded corporate AI market.
OpenAI’s enterprise unit now accounts for more revenue than its consumer business, CFO Sarah Friar told employees last month, according to CNBC. The company confidentially files its prospectus with the Securities and Exchange Commission in June, and while it has not officially set a listing date, Friar recently tells employees OpenAI will be a public company in 2027, while noting an earlier debut remains possible if business momentum continues.
We previously covered Nvidia’s agreement to acquire Hugging Face for about $13 billion, a deal aimed at strengthening its role in AI model distribution and infrastructure while keeping the platform’s open structure and brand. Our report also noted that the transaction could face regulatory scrutiny because it would place an important channel for sharing models, datasets and applications under Nvidia’s control.
