Highlights
- BMW raised long-term targets to an 8–10% automotive profit margin and over €7 billion in free cash flow by the start of the next decade.
- For 2028, BMW set interim goals of a 3–5% operating margin, over €5 billion free cash flow, and a 20% cut in divisions and management roles by mid-2027.
- In China, BMW aims for at least 95% localization of vehicles by 2030, expansion in luxury SUVs for the U.S., and introduces Neue Klasse EV in Europe in 2028.
Profit goals and operating overhaul
As reported by Reuters, BMW is targeting an automotive profit margin of 8% to 10% by the start of the next decade and automotive free cash flow of more than 7 billion euros. That compares with its 2026 targets of 1% to 3% for the margin and more than 2.5 billion euros in free cash flow. For 2028, the carmaker sets an interim operating margin target of 3% to 5% and free cash flow of more than 5 billion euros. It also plans to reduce model variants across its portfolio, and there will be no successor to the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer.
By mid-2027, BMW says it will cut the number of divisions and related management roles by 20%, with a comparable reduction at lower organizational levels. The company also plans to significantly expand the use of artificial intelligence across its value chain, with AI expected to support processes from initial technical requirements through testing and release.
Regional production shifts and technology rollout
In China, BMW plans to expand local production in high-volume categories while limiting imports to models with the highest profit margins. It aims to lift the share of locally manufactured vehicles tailored to Chinese customer preferences to at least 95% by 2030, from just under 90% currently, and is also considering more exports from China to Southeast Asian markets. In the U.S., BMW plans to broaden its luxury SUV lineup with a new model positioned above the X7. With its Spartanburg plant in South Carolina operating at full capacity because of strong demand for luxury SUVs, the group is seeking greater regionalization to expand production of those vehicles in other sales regions.
In Europe, BMW plans to introduce a new entry-segment fully electric model from the Neue Klasse range in 2028. The company also says it will offer navigation-guided driver assistance in Germany under the DCAS regulation, with other countries, including the U.S., following in stages, while pursuing new partnerships inside the European Union to secure critical raw materials, components and semiconductors.
