Fitch rationale for the rating decision
As reported by Fitch Ratings, the agency affirms Zagrebacka Banka d.d.'s Long-Term Issuer Default Rating at 'A-' with a Stable Outlook and its Viability Rating at 'bbb', while assigning long-term and short-term deposit ratings of 'A-' and 'F2'. The agency says the issuer rating and Shareholder Support Rating are driven by a very high probability of support from parent UniCredit S.p.A., with the outlook aligned to the parent's rating profile.Fitch says the support assessment reflects ZABA's inclusion in UniCredit's single-point-of-entry resolution group, its strategic importance within the group and the reputational risk to UniCredit if the Croatian subsidiary were to default. The agency also points to central and eastern Europe as an important growth area for UniCredit, with ZABA supporting that strategy through its leading domestic franchise, strong operating performance and exposure to Croatia's expanding economy.
The standalone assessment is supported by ZABA's position as Croatia's largest bank, with about 26% of sector assets, along with healthy capital buffers, stable deposit funding and a disciplined risk appetite. Fitch adds that the bank benefits from a diversified business model across corporate, retail and public-sector banking, as well as operational support from UniCredit and a leading subsidiary bank in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
