Disney tech overhaul gains new CTO as streaming competition intensifies
Disney is deepening its technology push as it tries to sharpen its streaming position against Netflix and YouTube under CEO Josh D'Amaro. New chief technology officer Karandeep Anand says the company is well placed to compete, but warns staff that execution will require speed, focus, and tougher prioritization.

- Disney appoints its first companywide CTO, Saurabh Anand, in early October to drive a technology transformation amid intensifying streaming competition.
- Disney accelerates AI adoption and the integration of Disney+ and Hulu into a unified super app, expanding into games and merchandise to boost digital ecosystem engagement.
- Disney stock declines over 1% in the past year and more than 38% over five years, significantly underperforming the S&P 500's 17.3% and 74% respective gains.
CTO sets priorities for Disney's tech shift
As first reported by Business Insider, Anand tells employees in a memo at the end of his first week that Disney and the broader media sector are at an inflection point. He says the company's intellectual property portfolio and global fan base give it a strong position, while adding that success will not come easily in a more competitive environment.Anand starts in early October as Disney's first companywide CTO, hired by D'Amaro to lead a broader technology transformation. In the memo, he aligns himself with the three priorities D'Amaro previously set out, great storytelling as the company's North Star, technology in service of creativity, and operating as One Disney.
The executive says the company will need to be more selective about where it invests time and resources. He says progress will depend on focus, speed, and the willingness to reject good ideas in order to back stronger ones, while promising staff direct communication on priorities and tradeoffs as he meets teams across the business in the coming weeks.
Streaming pressure shapes broader business stakes
Disney is already leaning further into AI and the integration of Disney+ and Hulu as it works toward a broader streaming super app that also includes games and merchandise. The strategy reflects the company's effort to build a more unified digital ecosystem as competition for viewer attention and subscription revenue intensifies.Anand joins Disney after previously leading Character.AI, a startup that received a cease-and-desist letter from Disney last year over chatbots based on its copyrighted characters without permission. The startup complied, according to the text.
The technology push also comes as D'Amaro faces investor pressure from Disney's weaker share performance. The stock is down more than 1% over the past year, while the S&P 500 gains 17.3%, and Disney shares are down more than 38% over five years even as broader U.S. stocks rise more than 74%.
Meta’s expanding AI push, led by early traction for its Muse assistant and a growing enterprise AI effort, underscored how the company is trying to open new revenue streams beyond advertising while committing heavily to infrastructure. Our earlier article also highlighted the investor stakes of that spending, focusing on whether rising capex can translate into durable returns and how AI funding structures could amplify risks if monetization lags.
