Financing supports smart grid rollout
As reported by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the financing package will help Beacon Power Services expand its work with Nigeria's electricity distribution companies, or DisCos, through smart metering systems, grid management software and meter data management tools.Beacon Power Services is an African energy technology company focused on smart grid solutions, network visibility and utility digitisation. Its software, analytics and metering technologies are designed to help electricity utilities across Africa improve operational performance, reduce losses and strengthen service delivery.
The planned deployment is expected to give DisCos better oversight of their networks while improving billing precision and collections. Customers are also expected to gain better access to information on electricity use and billing through digital platforms.
Power sector reform and broader impact
The investment is expected to support Nigeria's ongoing power sector reforms by showing how digital technology can improve electricity distribution. Wider use of smart metering and grid digitalisation could help make the sector more efficient and financially sustainable.Beacon Power Services has also committed to the UN's Women's Empowerment Principles and says it will introduce measures to increase opportunities for women in technical and leadership roles within the company.
