Willem Middelkoop: Dollar-based monetary system unsustainable since 1971
Dollar system unsustainable, gold resurgence

Willem Middelkoop reflects on his 2013 book The Big Reset where he argued that the dollar-based monetary system established after 1971 was unsustainable due to its foundation on mounting debt and mechanisms stabilizing gold prices.

Middelkoop predicted a future reboot of this system, with gold regaining a central role in global finance and a shift away from prolonged U.S. financial dominance.

Middelkoop has previously cited Treasury financial statements showing a $6.06 trillion shortfall for the 2025 fiscal year, calling the U.S. government insolvent in a recent report. In a separate note, he highlighted that Iran may allow oil tankers to pass the Strait of Hormuz if the oil is traded in Chinese yuan, according to his comments on Iranian trade policy. These observations align with his focus on global shifts in monetary and trade systems.
