Defence bonds simply mean more borrowing, Paul Johnson argues
Defence bonds are government borrowing

Paul Johnson argues that so-called defence bonds are essentially just another form of government borrowing.

He suggests there is no substantive economic difference between issuing defence bonds and any other type of borrowing, and encourages advocates to acknowledge the true nature of such measures.

Johnson has previously discussed how inheritance tax changes may affect the timing of deaths, citing evidence from Australia. In another recent article, he reviewed new targets to reach 3% and 3.5% of GDP by 2035, noting the significance of an additional £25bn. His recent comments continue his focus on the fiscal implications of policy proposals.
