Fed bill buying affects Treasury coupon supply, Joseph Wang notes
Fed bill buying impacts debt issuance

Joseph Wang, macro analyst / blogger at Fed Guy, suggests that Federal Reserve Reserve Management Purchases are not quantitative easing, but increased Fed bill purchases influence how Treasury issues debt.

According to Wang, higher demand for bills results in less coupon issuance by the Treasury, which in turn reduces coupon supply to the private sector—an effect similar to that of quantitative easing.

Wang previously argued that Japan’s use of the FIMA Repo Facility is primarily symbolic, with Japanese funds already held at the Fed. He also reported that markets showed signs of weakness as the Iran conflict escalated and the Fed raised rates. These observations add context to his recent analysis of Fed actions and Treasury issuance.
