Joseph Wang: Fed commitment to PCE target needed for lower rates
Fed urged to stick with PCE target

Joseph Wang, macro analyst / blogger at Fed Guy, criticized recent suggestions to change the Federal Reserve's inflation index target. Wang stated that reaffirming a commitment to the current Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) goal until it reaches 2 percent would be the best move to lower interest rates.

He described the proposal to switch indices at the last meeting as a sign of low competence, and pointed out previous examples of poor judgment, including being overly hawkish during and after the global financial crisis.

Wang has recently argued that AI-related debt is not displacing U.S. Treasuries as dealer holdings and swap spreads remain stable, according to a recent report. He has also questioned whether the Federal Reserve’s mandate on long-term interest rates involves White House policy decisions in a separate analysis. These topics add context to his ongoing critique of central bank decision-making.
