Growth and fiscal policy debate

Matthew Yglesias said it is unwise to depend solely on economic growth to resolve U.S. fiscal challenges.

He added that while he agrees with budget experts on this point, he believes many institutional progressives tend to undervalue the importance of economic growth, particularly when Democrats discuss budget and appropriations policy.

Yglesias has previously argued that if an AI market bubble bursts, the appropriate policy response is to allow the market to adjust without intervention. In a separate commentary, he described property taxes as an efficient source of local government funding and suggested reform of land value taxes. His recent comments on fiscal policy follow these earlier positions on taxation and market corrections.
