October CRA ratings across 10 states

As reported by Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, the evaluations cover institutions that received ratings ranging from outstanding to satisfactory, under a framework that reviews how banks meet local credit needs while operating safely and soundly.

The list includes banks and savings associations in Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah and Wisconsin. Institutions rated outstanding are First National Bank of Wauchula in Florida, First National Bank of Steeleville and State Bank of the Lakes, National Association in Illinois, Pioneer Bank in New Mexico, McCurtain County National Bank in Oklahoma, and Varo Bank, National Association in Utah.

The remaining institutions in the release received satisfactory ratings, including lenders in Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Mississippi, New York, Oklahoma, Texas and Wisconsin.

Compliance benchmark for community lending

Under the Community Reinvestment Act, the OCC assesses an institution's record of serving the credit needs of its entire community, including low- and moderate-income neighborhoods. Possible ratings are outstanding, satisfactory, needs to improve and substantial noncompliance.

The agency said its website provides a searchable list of all public CRA evaluations issued since April 1996. It also publishes a separate list of institutions scheduled to be examined for CRA compliance.

Our earlier article examined how persistent geopolitical tensions and elevated fiscal spending are increasing borrowing and refinancing risks for sovereign issuers in a higher-rate environment. We noted that emerging and frontier markets are especially exposed due to heavier interest-service burdens and narrower revenue bases, while energy and food price shocks can prolong inflation and strain public finances.
