Highlights

  • Professor Davin Chor appointed as MAS Term Professor in Economics and Finance from 5 to 11 November 2026 by NUS and MAS.
  • Chor's research on U.S.-China tariffs, global value chains, and supply chain reallocation presented at the 2023 Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium.
  • MAS highlights Chor's appointment as critical amid global supply chain reassessment, directly impacting Singapore's open and trade-integrated economy.

Week-long appointment and programme

As announced by the Monetary Authority of Singapore, the National University of Singapore and MAS have jointly appointed Professor Davin Chor as the MAS Term Professor in Economics and Finance from 5 to 11 November 2026. He is being hosted by the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at NUS and MAS's Economic Policy Group during the term.

Chor is the Michael G. Fisch 1983 Professor and Globalisation Chair at the Tuck School of Business, Dartmouth College, and a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. The Singaporean economist holds a PhD in Economics from Harvard University and serves as an associate editor of the Journal of International Economics.

His research focuses on international trade and political economy, including the economic and political effects of U.S.-China tariffs and the reallocation of U.S. supply chain trade. A paper he co-authored on the shift in direct U.S. sourcing from China to other countries was presented at the 2023 Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium.

Policy relevance for Singapore

During the visit, Chor is delivering a public lecture at NUS on 6 November 2026 titled, "U.S.-China Trade at a Crossroads: Reflections on the Outlook for China's Growth." He is also engaging NUS faculty members in dialogue sessions on his latest research findings.

MAS says Chor will also speak at the central bank and engage senior policymakers and economists on international trade, global supply chains and the impact of globalisation. MAS Deputy Managing Director and Chief Economist Edward Robinson says the appointment comes as trade tensions and geopolitical developments prompt firms to reassess supply chains, an issue with direct importance for Singapore as an open economy integrated into global production networks.

Professor Joseph Liow, dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, says Chor's work on global value chains and international trade has helped reshape how scholars and policymakers understand shifts in the global trade landscape. MAS describes him as the 26th MAS Term Professor.

In our earlier report on the WTO’s view of lasting trade shifts from wars and tariffs, we noted that repeated geopolitical shocks are prompting companies to redesign supply chains and shipping routes for resilience, even at higher cost. The piece also highlighted expectations that some disruptions—particularly in the Middle East—could weigh on regional trade flows, while global trade growth in 2026 may still be supported by demand for AI-related goods despite ongoing uncertainty.
