2027 GMC Sierra upgrades

General Motors is updating one of its most important profit drivers with a redesigned 2027 GMC Sierra 1500 lineup that adds new V-8 engine options and reshapes the model range. The changes are especially significant for high-margin Denali and AT4 variants, which account for roughly half of current Sierra sales, according to GM.

Highlights

  • GM will streamline the 2027 GMC Sierra 1500 lineup to Pro, Elevation, AT4, AT4X, Denali and Denali Ultimate trims, dropping SLE and SLT variants.
  • The 2027 Sierra features redesigned styling, an upgraded interior with over 60 inches of screens, and new 5.7-liter and 6.6-liter V-8 engine options.
  • GM's U.S. sales are expected to drop about 7% in the first half of 2024, outpacing the market's 3% decline, with Sierra 1500 first-quarter sales down 2% to 51,900 units.

Product overhaul and model strategy

As reported by CNBC, GM unveiled the 2027 GMC Sierra 1500 on Thursday with redesigned interior and exterior styling, while streamlining the lineup to Pro, Elevation, AT4, AT4X, Denali and Denali Ultimate trims.

The automaker is dropping the mid-tier SLE and SLT variants, which currently start at about $51,500 and $57,900, respectively. GM says pricing and performance specifications for the next-generation trucks will be released closer to the launch late this year.

Michael MacPhee, vice president of GM's GMC and Buick brands, said in a release that the next-generation Sierra combines a new generation of small block V-8 power, off-road capability and the brand's most immersive cabin yet. Current Sierra 1500 pricing ranges from roughly $41,000 for the entry-level Pro to more than $86,000 for the Denali Ultimate.

Interior, powertrain and sales pressure

The new Sierra arrives a week after GM introduced updates to the mechanically related Chevrolet Silverado 1500, although the GMC trucks adopt distinct styling cues from the brand's all-electric Sierra and feature a redesigned cabin. The interior includes added storage, a sliding center console and a folding work surface made possible by moving the gear shifter behind the steering wheel.

GM also adds more than 60 inches of available screens, including an 11.5-inch passenger display for media and entertainment functions. Under the hood, the trucks offer a new generation of GM small block V-8 gasoline engines in 5.7-liter and 6.6-liter versions, alongside two V-6 options, including a GM-exclusive diesel variant.

The launch comes as GM faces softer demand in the U.S. market. Cox Automotive forecasts GM's U.S. sales through the first half of this year will decline by roughly 7%, compared with an expected overall market drop of about 3%; GM's first-quarter sales fell 9.7% from a year earlier, while Sierra 1500 sales slipped about 2% to nearly 51,900 units.

Our earlier coverage of the revised U.S. first-quarter GDP data noted that growth was upgraded to a 2.1% annualized pace, largely due to a downward revision in imports. At the same time, consumer spending was sharply marked down, underscoring softer underlying household demand even as parts of the economy—such as business investment—remained more resilient.
