Rolls-Royce shares test critical support amid rising oil and bond risks
Rolls-Royce tests critical support near GBX 1,420

Rolls-Royce has lost a key technical support level in the absence of fresh company-specific catalysts. That leaves the shares more exposed to the broader backdrop, with elevated UK bond yields and geopolitical risks becoming increasingly important drivers.

With no major new corporate developments from Rolls-Royce, attention has shifted towards UK bonds and geopolitics. The 10-year UK gilt yield on 6 October was recorded at 5.40%. This is still very close to multi-year highs and will make equity markets vulnerable to any macroeconomic data.

Further risk is coming from the Middle East. On 7 October, Brent rose by roughly 0.8% to $101.34 a barrel following fresh Houthi attacks that damaged two airports in southern Saudi Arabia, alongside reports of an explosion near Iran’s Qeshm Island. The developments have revived concerns over possible escalation and disruption to oil supplies.

A break below GBX 1,420 could expose GBX 1,380

The bearish scenario from the previous analysis has played out in full. Rolls-Royce shares failed to clear resistance around the 50-day SMA before breaking below key support at GBX 1,450 and reaching the previously identified target near GBX 1,420.

For today’s session, GBX 1,420 becomes the main technical level to watch. If sellers manage to establish the price below it, the risk of further downside would increase materially, bringing support near GBX 1,380 into focus. This remains the base-case scenario for the next several sessions.

The current bearish setup would be invalidated by a recovery and sustained move back above GBX 1,450. Such a move would point to a false breakdown and shift attention back towards resistance at GBX 1,500.

Macro pressure raises the risk of further profit-taking

Rolls-Royce is now facing a combination of technical weakness and a deteriorating external backdrop. As long as gilt yields remain close to multi-year highs and the oil market continues to carry a geopolitical risk premium, buyers may struggle to regain control quickly.

The next few sessions could therefore remain volatile. The reaction around GBX 1,420 should provide an important signal as to whether the market is preparing for another round of profit-taking or whether the current correction is approaching a point of local stabilisation.
