Roche licenses obesity drug candidate from China’s Rona Therapeutics in deal worth up to $1.16 billion
Roche targets obesity market

Roche is expanding its push into the fast-growing obesity treatment market with a licensing agreement for an experimental drug candidate from China-based Rona Therapeutics. The deal gives the Swiss drugmaker access to an RNAi therapy targeting ALK7, as competition intensifies in a market led by Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk.

Highlights

  • Rona Therapeutics will receive a $100 million upfront payment and up to $1.06 billion in milestone payments from Roche for its investigational obesity drug candidate.
  • Roche's licensed candidate targets activin receptor-like kinase 7 (ALK7), complementing its existing metabolic disease pipeline amid aggressive expansion in obesity therapeutics.
  • Roche aims to strengthen its position in the obesity drug market, currently dominated by Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk, by acquiring new pipeline assets.

Licensing terms and pipeline expansion

As reported by Reuters, Rona Therapeutics says Roche has entered a licensing agreement worth up to $1.16 billion for the Chinese biotech firm's investigational obesity drug candidate.

Under the agreement, Rona is set to receive an upfront payment of $100 million and is eligible for as much as $1.06 billion in potential milestone payments, along with tiered royalties on global net sales.

The investigational RNAi candidate targets activin receptor-like kinase 7, or ALK7, a target linked to obesity and metabolic diseases.

Obesity market competition intensifies

Roche has been racing to establish a position in the obesity drug market, which is currently dominated by Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk.

In September, Roche reported positive mid-stage data for its obesity and diabetes candidate enicepatide, which helped patients lose weight and lower blood sugar levels. The new licensing deal adds another potential asset to the company's metabolic disease pipeline as large drugmakers seek broader exposure to the obesity segment.

Our earlier article on Novo Nordisk’s obesity and diabetes pipeline highlighted the company’s plan to broaden its portfolio beyond Wegovy while treating India as a key market for clinical trials and future launches. We noted that Novo expects to roll out several new obesity products between 2027 and 2030, leveraging India’s large patient base and research capabilities to support development and maintain competitiveness.
