What's behind PepsiCo's latest 2.3% stock pullback?
Pepsico slides 2.34% today

PepsiCo, Inc. (PEP) fell 2.34% as selling pressure intensified following a downside gap at the open, even as the company renewed its exclusive beverage partnership with Taco Bell through 2036. The decline is reinforced by a technical setup where the stock remains below its 200-day moving average and bearish momentum persists despite short- and medium-term buying interest.

ETF outflows and KFC contract loss temper optimism from Taco Bell extension

PepsiCo renewed its exclusive beverage partnership with Taco Bell for 11 more years, securing its product placement at Taco Bell, Taco Bell Cantina, and Live Más Cafe locations in the U.S. through 2036. This agreement follows the company's loss of the U.S. KFC beverage contract to Coca-Cola and maintains PepsiCo's international business in markets such as Canada, the UK, Ireland, and Thailand. Third-quarter revenues exceeded expectations, and full-year guidance was updated, with margin pressures continuing in North American beverages and snacks and a strong dividend yield reported. ETF flows turned negative in October, though price action has remained under broader selling pressure.

Anton Kharitonov, expert at Traders Union, notes the persistent weakness in PepsiCo’s share price despite the renewed Taco Bell partnership. He points out sustained selling pressure, evidenced by a close below the 200-day moving average and the inability for positive news to trigger a rebound. Technical signals like the bearish 50/200-day alignment and negative ETF flows reinforce his cautious outlook. Kharitonov warns that overbought readings alongside a neutral MACD raise risk of a sharper pullback. "The upside is constrained while margin and volume headwinds remain unresolved — a defensive strategy is warranted here," he says.
Viktoras Karapetjanc, expert at Traders Union, believes the renewal of PepsiCo’s Taco Bell contract is a strong strategic win supporting market confidence. He highlights resilient third-quarter revenues and an upgraded full-year outlook, which reinforce long-term growth prospects. The high dividend yield and international business strength offer additional upside. "Bullish structure remains intact and further growth is expected as new agreements and global demand drive opportunity," Karapetjanc says.
Jainam Mehta, market strategist, sees a mixed technical picture for PepsiCo. Momentum is split, with overbought signals clashing against neutral MACD and lingering volatility. He notes the volatility band between $132.13 and $140.35 as a range for tactical trades. "A potential breakout above $138.17 could offer short-term upside, but failure at support may create contrarian entry points," Mehta advises.

Short-term buying and overbought signals collide with long-term bearish setup

PepsiCo is trading above its 20-day moving average ($128.89) and 50-day moving average ($134.21), but remains below the 200-day moving average ($146.18). This signals underlying buying interest in the short and medium term, but continued long-term pressure from sellers due to the bearish 50/200-day average alignment. The nearest support is at the intraday low of $135.62, and immediate resistance is at $138.17. Momentum indicators present a mixed outlook: the MACD is neutral, while both ADX and RSI (at 68.5) indicate a buy bias and strong, potentially overbought momentum. Stochastic RSI, CCI, and BBP signal further overbought conditions, with BBP at 7.26 confirming buyer dominance intraday. The Awesome Oscillator highlights ongoing strength. The stock slipped to $135.63 today with a 2.34% decline after a $0.86 downside gap (0.62%) at the open and is trading close to the day’s low, while intraday volatility measures 1.88%. This setup reflects sustained selling pressure and a divergence among momentum readings, as some indicators point to overbought risk with a neutral MACD.

Earlier, analysts noted that PepsiCo’s strong price momentum was tempered by rising technical risks and a possible short-term reversal amid overbought conditions. The current setup introduces additional downside risk if $135.62 does not hold as support, with volatility likely to persist as consolidation develops within the $132.13 to $140.35 range.
